Plex Vs Media Server on PS4

So I Have a PS4 in the living rooms upstairs, synology NAS 1813+, downstairs connected through LAN to all 3 networks at home. Plex is very very slow, buggy on the ps4 and you cant watch movies without frequent interruptions every few seconds. When I read the forums and when I contacted Plex support I was told this is because you NAS is aweful and old, so I was going to order a new NAS, HOWEVER I downloaded the native PS4 media player and although it has a dull boring interface and displaying subtitles is next to impossible, yet it doesnt crash at all, and the movies from the SAME source (the NAS) play perfectly well without any single interruption at all. Your problems guys doesnt lie with your NAS or your network or even your PS4, the problem lies in Plex itself. I haven’t cancelled my subscription yet, but if plex remains that BUGGY on PS4 I guess I will be forced to cancel.

The Plex client on devices such as the Xbox or Playstation is not comparable to the native apps. Afaik, they are totally different beasts due to the restrictions each of the device manufactures (Microsoft, Sony) puts on them. Exaggerating somewhat (but sadly not that much) that would be to compare VLC (which can play anything and everything) on your PC to the Plex Web player which has severe restrictions on it due to the limitations that the actual browser you use supports.

Without logs, and just by going on your comment that your NAS is “awful and old”, my best guess would be that he native app plays it without any transcoding nor remuxing of the file but that the Plex client app does (due to the restrictions mentioned above) - something which your NAS can’t handle. Thus you have a few options. Replace the NAS so that it can handle transcodes. Pre-transcode your files so that they can be played natively (thus circumventing the issue). Or get a Plex client which can handle much more such as a Rasperry Pi, Odroid, Nvidia Shield, NUC or such and remove the Playstation.

You say nothing about your media which is as important as the hardware

And try video station on your synology.
It is likely to work as well as your PS4 setup.

How would video station be any different ??
Transcoding videos ? This takes millenia

Transcoding is one of the best aspects with Plex, though it demands that you use a server that has the capabilities to use it - https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250377-Transcoding-Media
