DSM 7, New Install. Package/Download Package/Docker Image? best choice?

Apologies for the probable redundancies… I did search, and could not find a concise/clear answer.

I have a “spare” 918+ I want to use for Plex and a few other small services, but for now just Plex. My options, as I see them, are:

  1. The package listed in the package center - but that is out of date, and rarely updated
  2. The package I can download from plex.tv - up to date, and well supported, but THEORETICALLY has a larger security surface as it has not been checked by Synology, and isn’t contained by docker
  3. The official docker image from the registry

Which of those is the “official” or best supported method? #1 is out I think, #2 is cool, but #3 is likely getting more support because it applies to many more systems than just DSM. Also it’s arguably the most secure.

Unfortunately, none of the guides I can find are up to date and straightforward.

You can install the one from Package Center (1.29.2.6364) which will work well for you on the DS918+

If you download from Plex.tv, you want the DSM7 - 64 bit package.

While the Package Center version is older, it’s also extremely stable.
There are issues with 1.40.x and hardware transcoding on certain platforms which won’t impact you with 1.29.2
