Migrating DS1019+ to DSM 7 running plex and docker

I am currently running DSM 6.2.4-25556 update 7 and would like to upgrade to DSM 7.
I have my plex server and docker containers running on the 1019+, I wanted to know what is the best way to upgrade without screwing things up? Any suggestion how to upgrade while maintaining all settings?

Docker crossing DSM versions is an unknown to me.

I had docker in DSM 6 but DSM 7 does not offer docker anymore for this NAS.

All things being equal –

  1. DSM should upgrade as normal
  2. Package Center will then want to upgrade all your packages
( which will include the Docker package )
  3. Your containers SHOULD be kept sacred and untouched – but this is the unknown.

Worst case scenario, you’ll need to create a new container instance and point it at exactly the same locations you have now.

Is Plex running native or in a Docker container?

If the former, see the Plex Synology FAQ: Synology FAQ - Questions, Answers, and a few How-To's - #34 by ChuckPa

I had iPerf & Tautulli running in Docker on my DS918+ when I updated to DSM 7. There was zero problems with the update.

Definitely back up important files. Just in case something goes bad during the update.

I am running native plex from the package center. Everything is running in docker.

Does the plex share need to be changed over to " `PlexMediaServer" under DSM 7?

to make this work the best –

  1. Uninstall the DSM 6 package
  2. Upgrade to DSM 7
  3. Get all your other packages stable first
  4. When you next install the “PlexMediaServer” package, It will create the shared folder for you.
  5. It it give an error about permissions ( expect it to do this ), follow the instructions

DO NOT PANIC if things don’t go right. There are a couple important steps
If you don’t panic, you’ll keep all your server & metadata

If things are perfect when you install DSM 7 Plex, it will stay at “Installing” for a long time.

This is NORMAL. During the first installation, it will convert & move all your metadata from the Plex shared folder and place it in the new PlexMediaServer shared folder.

If, however, you still see you have Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server when installation is complete – This isn’t a problem.

We’ll show you how to fix it (it’s part of the documentation)
