DTS audio playing as stereo on Android TV

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2902
Player Version#: 8.1.2.18135

Hey there!

I’m having issues with the Plex app on my new TV. It’s a Philips 55OLED854 running Android TV.

When playing a movie with a DTS soundtrack (doesn’t matter if it’s standard DTS or DTS-MA) the soundtrack plays as stereo. Both the app and the TV is set to passthrough.

When playing through the built-in media app (through DLNA or USB) DTS works perfectly.

When casting through the built-in Chromecast feature, it’s transcoded to Dolby which is fine.

This leads me to believe there is something up with the Plex app. Is there something that I’ve missed or is it a bug?

Edit: Tried setting passthrough to off so that the Plex app handles the decoding. Dolby movies still work, DTS still plays as stereo.

Shortly after I posted this I found a support article on Philips’ site that stated that it does not.

Shouldn’t Plex transcode the audio to Dolby then however?

I have the exact same issue on my Sony KD-49X8309C Android TV. With passthrough enabled, it will send through Dolby audio no problem. When playing content with DTS audio, it just sends through stereo PCM. With passthrough disabled, it sends stereo PCM no matter what the audio codec is, even though the server is sending the full 7.1 audio direct stream or transcoded to 5.1.

There is no option on Android to change audio channel settings. There is no option on Android to change which formats are supported for passthrough either.

When using the Plex app on an external device like a phone and casting the exact same content to the same TV with DTS audio, the Plex server transcodes the audio to Dolby 5.1 and it plays correctly through my amp with the intended surround sound audio.

I made a video example here:

Sorry for the late reply!
Seems like you’re having the exact same issue as me. Using the Plex plugin on Kodi fixes it, but it’s so clunky.
In other words, it’s definitely Plex’s fault but given the lack of response from them, I don’t think they care.

I too have this problem on my KD-55XD9305 and if I remember correctly, Plex used to transcode DTS to Dolby Digital in the past.
It would be nice if this can be fixed again, as this was working in the past.

I hate to mention this but Emby did a easy fix with this as in the options there are check boxes for DTS and DTS-HD decoding, if unchecked it will transcode. Lifetime Pass member here also…

We used to have an option like that ages ago but it was removed for some reason. I guess they wanted it to me more automatic, which makes sense, but it’s obviously not working so my hope is that they either fix it or add that option again.

Hi, it seems I have the same issue.
My setup:
FreeNAS-11.3-U4.1 with PLEX Version 1.20.1.3252 wired connected to Sony Android TV (BRAVIA 4K 2015) with PLEX ver: 8.5.1.19778 (2c9485c3)
Setup on PLEX (FreeNAS): Direct Play is ON & Direct Stream is ON. (screenshot is attached)
Do PLEX have a workaround for this, or will PLEX release a fix for this?

Thanks

Still no solution, Plex?

Just got a Sony x900h and am suffering from the same issue. What a disappointment…

edit Well just minutes after posting my reply, I found a setting in my TV that I changed and it looks like it worked! My Denon receiver now shows DTS instead of Stereo when playing a 4k movie with DTS 5.1 audio via Plex.

Setting I changed:
Settings/Display & Audio/Audio Output/Pass through mode/Set to Auto

Just hit the same thing with a Sony A9F. Thought I had it was the solution to my problems where Plex on an AppleTV (With enhanced player) won’t play some 4K content smoggy, stuttering to the point of being unwatchable. Casting the the TV and the video is smooth as silk, but I’m only getting stereo despite having passthrough set in the TV’s audio settings. Plex on the iPad says it’s sending 7.1 channels, but the Marantz app says only stereo is coming from the TV.

TL;DR Change passthrough to “Optical” in the Plex Android tv app even if you want your sound through HDMI. If it works for you, spread the word to other people with the same problem.

Sooo I might have fund a possible solution. I have a Philips 65OLED854 (Android tv) and had the same problems as many others seems to have, no dts passthrough from the android tv app. I read in another thread about a guy that tested running the sound though an TOSLINK optical cable which worked for him. So i started trying to remember where I put my old optical TOSLINK cable… But hey I might just change the pass through setting already while I’m still on the couch. That’s when it hit me, it cant be that simple can it? Tested a movie with DTS sound without connecting an optical cable and voilà! DTS pass through via HDMI to my receiver working.

@Plex: Is there some mismatch with the settings buttons in the gui aka “hdmi” -> “optical”, “optical”→ “hdmi”?

I can confirm that this works. I’ve changed passthrough to Optical, even though I only use HDMI over ARC and now it’s playing DTS correctly with 5.1 channels. It is transcoding it to Dolby Digital but it’s working.

Confirmed this works on a Hisense 65-H9G as well. Thanks for the fix!

Confirmed to be working on my Philips as well! Greatly appreciated!

First I thought it must be a Philips thing since I’ve got one of those as well, but now reading about other brands I guess it’s still a Plex thing.

This setting tells the server to transcode everything to AC3/DD. Including supported formats like EAC3/DD+, TrueHD and so on.

It’s sort of a fix, but you loose other functions.

when I use the optical “hack”, DTS movies just don’t play at all, they keep loading. What frustrates me the most is that the Plex app built in to my TV has this options screen but the Android app (on Shield TV) doesn’t seem to allow that kind of control… when i’d expect the Android app to be far better supporterd

TV App works perfect with this setting, but is too slow to play 4K media

This workaround seems to work, but I have mixed luck with this. I will need to test some more.
Is there anybody from the mods or employees that we can ping or pull into this?
This seems to be a serious flaw in the plex app on Android TV IMHO. This should be fixed.

We are with enough people having this issue right now so we should be able to provide you good debug info to get this fixed.

@PlexInfo

Can you please pick this up or at least give your opinion about this?
