there’s no rock-solid definition.
I’m currently going with “shorts” referring to actual short films that are linked to the movie (e.g. Hammy’s Boomerang Adventure of Over the Hedge, Riley’s First Date? of Inside Out or Aningaaq of Gravity).
I’m using “scenes” for pretty much anything that doesn’t fit the other categories (e.g. included music videos, such as the “3 Best Friends” song from The Hangover).
Okay, how about the difference between a short and a featurette?
The Extra Types -behindthescenes, -deleted, -featurette, -interview, -scene, and -short are simply labels and control the order in which extras are displayed. Only trailer does more than that.
So the basic answer is the extra types mean what ever you want them to mean. You could for example label everything that came as extras on a DVD as a featurette and not worry about it at all.
It is worth marking at least one trailer as a trailer as then it gives you the trailer button and plex then knows that it is a trailer for the “Cinema Trailers to Play Before Movies” feature.
maiade’s response is correct.
still… it makes sense to stick to some structure if you want to find certain content in the same way.
we’ve already elaborated on scenes and shorts. however I’ve included it in the table below.
| Type | Description | Remark |
|---|---|---|
| Behind the Scenes | Anything happening behind the scenes during the productions... | I'm mostly using it for gag-reels or bloopers and the occasional "a day on set with actor/producer/director xyz". |
| Deleted Scenes | All deleted or alternative scenes. I believe this is the most self-explaining section ;) |
Personally I started copying the exact categorization from my discs such as "Additional Scene 47 - Scene Title", "Removed Scene 47 - Scene Title" or actually "Deleted Scene 47 - Scene Title". Considering these titles get so long, Plex will never properly show them, I've opted to name them just "47 Scene Title". Only exceptions are deleted scenes of different context (deleted, alternative, expanded... versions). If there's a bunch of those, I tend to include a label in brackets after the scene title for everything that's not just a regular deleted scene. |
| Featurettes | According to Wikipedia, Featurettes are (sometimes fictional) documentations about a movie. | I'm using this category for making-of extras or videos explaining the world of a movie (mostly for the fictional ones). Over the Hedge e.g. includes an extra named "Critter 411" which explains the various animals in the movie; The Good Dinosaur includes a video called "True Lies about Dinosaurs" explaining how some elements of the movie are based on half-truths... |
| Interviews | Interviews with cast and crew | again... that's one of the more simple ones ;) |
| Scenes | Any additional scenes / extras beyond the scope of the other types. | I’m using “scenes” for pretty much anything that doesn’t fit the other categories (e.g. included music videos, such as the “3 Best Friends” song from The Hangover). |
| Shorts | Actual short films | Could be short films associated with that movie or any kind of short films included on the dvd that you don't deem worthy to be included in a dedicated short films library (e.g. Hammy’s Boomerang Adventure of Over the Hedge, Riley’s First Date? of Inside Out or Aningaaq of Gravity). |
| Trailers | Trailers or teasers you have stored locally | Sometimes Plex doesn't find an online trailer for some movies or the online versions either aren't very good or on-topic -- or if you want to maintain multiple versions because they're just that good ;) |
Absolutely I wan’t meaning that there should be no logic to what Scott does but that it should be a logic that makes sense to them. It can be quite annoying if things are inconsistently labelled. A simple scheme that does not require documentation that can be applied without having to think too hard is more likely to be consistently applied.
The other thing to think about is whether the extra concerned will earn it’s storage space. Not all extras are worth keeping in my experience. This does vary depending on your own preferences, and the complexity of the extra. For example I am interested in the technical processes in the production of an animation. However I don’t usually bother ripping extras on this because they usually use multiple views which end up as multiple files and you cannot recreate the experience of playing the DVD.
