I am attempting to replace the DVR box from verizon with my own hardware over my home network. All the hardware described is wired (not wifi) to gigabit switches within my home network. I have an HD HomeRun Prime (3 tuner) with cable card connected. I can access live tv via the channels app on my apple tv (V3, 2013, A1469). I can set up recordings via the plex app on Mac OS, and they save “properly” on my WD MyCloud EX4100 in the file structure. The videos are pretty large .ts files.
The PROBLEM is that when I try to watch the recordings on the apple tv, I get the first frame of the video, and the “spinner.” eventually, the whole thing freezes, and I have to manually quit, and restart the app. I can watch the recordings via the plex app on my network LAN wired mac, and my MacBook on wifi, so I know the recordings are working. Any thoughts on how to get the videos to play on the apple tv would be appreciated.
If there is a way to automatically encode the files into an m4v container, or post process them automatically, I’m open to that as well. I’m trying to avoid manually editing and transcode everything over again…
I don’t have an apple tv nor do I know why this is happening but you can have your PMS transcode your recordings WHILE recording (it is a setting in the DVR setup menu). You should make sure that your server setup can handle transcoding 3 streams (since you have 3 tuners) on the fly and keep up so you don’t end up with failed recordings though. Alternatively you can do what I am doing which is to hand off the recordings (once complete) to something like MCEBuddy so they can be transcode to the EXACT specifications that Apple TV can handle so everything DirectPlays all the time.
Also if you are handy at scripts you can write a post processing script that runs after comskip if you have it enabled. I have mine running handbrake to slim it down.

Are you using the EX4100 as your Plex server or just as a storage box?
