DVR recordings are HUGE

Server Version#: 4.43.4
Tuner Make/Model: HDHomeRun Connect 4

The DVR is working as expected but they are in type .ts and they are like 10x the size of recordings I get when using PlayOn (.mp4).

Any ideas how I can reduce the file size in my recordings?

You’re getting the full-quality video from a local network, I’m guessing. Those are higher quality than something like PlayOn, but are MPEG2 transport streams and they’re huge.

If possible, I’d make the case to buy a larger drive and just enjoy that higher quality. But that may not be an option for you.

You can have Plex transcode these recordings on-the-fly by going into the Live TV/DVR settings, and clicking the “Device Settings” on the HDHomeRun device. Change “Convert video while recording” from off to Transcode.

For any existing recordings, you can use Handbrake to encode them to a smaller size. Transcoding will take some time, the length depends on your CPU. There’s a learning curve but it’s not too bad.

Thanks for the help. I have loaded a trial version of MCEBuddy 2.5 release 4 and it appears to be working. So I turned off transcoding and will see how well MCEBuddy works. I like the remove ads feature. I am trying to get rid of TIVO, since you have to have a hardwire connection. My wife isn’t a fan though but I have 30 days to try and work out the kinks of HDHomeRun or return it.

PS: I have 10 TB of storage for my videos, so I just don’t want to consume them up on video that isn’t be transmitted in HD.
