DVR Recordings crash and most are corrupt

Hi guys, just setup a home run DVR on my plex system and having a few issues. If i set something to record it tends to start but then crashes after a bit, usually when its near the end of the program, also the recordings schedule says stuff is still recording when its not and finally when it does manage to record its not great quality. My setup is as follows

Plex Pass user on latest version 1.7.2.3878
DVR is a home run connect
Server is quite good, i5 Proc 8Gb ram tried recording to iscsi drives and local drives both the same issue
Live TV works ok on my iPad (Bonus ;-))
Never had any issues with plex before, however i understand DVR is beta so thought i should report it

Thanks

Are you using wired connections for the Plex Server and HDHR Connect? Any other information you can provide such as OS. Does the Connect have good signal strength? Is the Connect firmware up to date, should be 20161117.

Hi Thanks for answering, the server and homerun are both wired through a gigabit switch, the homerun is on version 20161117 and plex is the latest. My plex server is running windows server 2012R2 with a readynas with 4 4Tb drives installed, i have tried recording to the nas and also a local 2Tb drive both same. The connect has very good signal as do my tv’s.

Search the forum I know there were some other posts in which other users are running Windows Server 2012R2. I don’t recall the issues or if there was a resolution but have seen some posts in the last few weeks.

Do you recordings start out okay and then turn pixelated and buffer and are un-watchable?

Mine are fine.

That’s very possible, but I and several other people on the forums have been having problems with the latest builds of Plex Media Server. As of 1.7.0 and above these versions force files on the HD Home Run Connect to be remuxed into MKV format. For some reason this causes buffering and pixelation issues with some but not all recordings. It’s possible that this is related to the same issue here. The solution for others including myself has been to downgrade to 1.6.1 as this was the last version to allow nothing to be done to the recordings and leave them as .ts streams. Attached it a photo of what the recordings look like.

I am using 2 Connects and a Prime in my setup on Windows 10. I do Post Processing with the recorded files to remove commercials and convert to mp4. Just grabbed a mkv file while it was in Post Processing to verify it is fine and there was no problems viewing the recording. Wonder if there is any common setups with those experiencing the problem. The other posts you have found is everyone running the same OS?

No I’ve seen posts about it happening to people running Windows and OSX.

I am also having this problem on the NVIDIA Shield TV.

Looks like this issue relates to this: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1445135#Comment_1445135

I’ve recorded the same show twice and only the newer software version (1.7.2) has the stuttering/corruption while the version on 1.6.1 records just fine.

The corruption seems to be totally random and doesn’t affect the entire video, certain parts will play fine or on a few I’ve noticed the entire audio track get out of sync after the garbled video appears.

I’d like to know if these corrupted MKVs are permanently ruined or if there is a way to restore them to TS along with a fix for this problem ASAP

I tried using an MKVextract tool to extract the individual video track as was mentioned by someone on another forum post about this issue. They had said they were able to then place the file in a new container and it solved the issue but I was unable to replicate this. The extracted file still had the corruption in the recording. They also ended up downgrading to 1.6.1 and changed the remux to none to fix the problem.

I used HandBrake to do the same and the corruption was still present. Another reason we need a fix ASAP

Thanks for the reply’s guys, not sure if your issue is the same as mine, i am not getting pixilation it just stops recording sometimes, however last night i did a test it would appear that if i try to record something after the program has started it seems to cause the issue, also it seems to have more issues with series linked items than one of items. Or it could be that what recorded correctly was fine when i wasn’t logged into my server on the web browser as recordings done overnight seem to fail less than ones in the day… I do however think that this is somehow down to the converting to mkv, even if i turn off the trans-code option on the dvr setup page it still records as a mkv ? checked processor usage when its recording and its using like 3% of the processor and 2 out of 8 Gb ram so its not a server resource issue.

If you’re on version 1.7.0+ the container will automatically be remuxed to MKV. I believe that this somehow corrupts the recordings for myself and others.

Not sure whats going on to be honest now, most recordings are failing full stop, start recording then quit after about 2 mins, some say transcoder error some say its recorded fine but hasn’t, all are low quality when they do record, bit disappointed at the minute with it, hopefully they get it fixed soon

@Incubugs I haven’t experienced that. My recordings go fine but the resulting MKV is definitely corrupted.

Yup mine are as well some are ok but most fail and many are corrupt. Any advice or updates from plex staff would be nice …

Rather strangely, my recordings have started to work fine despite no changes in my system. One recording went a bit ropey about 20 minutes from the end of a 2 hour show but the British Touring cars recorded perfectly from start to finish, almost 7 hours.

Hi guys - any news on this issue? I noticed the update that just dropped didn’t seem to address this corruption/pixellation issue in the notes? I’m running plex on a dedicated Mac with an HD Homerun Extend. It is connected via wireless (to a very good router) but this has always been the case and now it seems that almost all my recordings are corrupted and extremely pixellated. I can usually tell from the thumbnail that it is corrupt because it looks smeared like the pic below. Nothing actually “crashes”, it records the entire thing, but after the first few seconds it becomes corrupted. Appreciate any ideas folks may have. Thanks!
