@CodeCat I found that they have tuner release issues and run away tuner lock that fills up hard drives. Plus they’re transcoder throttle is not that well polished. This is supposed to be addressed with the release of their new live TV but I’ve been waiting for about 6 months now for that. Don’t know if that’s been resolved as I’ve been trying to stay loyal to Plex through all these fun times. I do like the way Plex looks though in comparison. If they would just get their act together and polish the product up (stop breaking it), I wouldn’t always be considering switching to Emby again:).
Yea, the tuner release was the “one legit” issue that I mentioned I had run into as well. I remember I was able to solve it easily enough by creating a scheduled task to check for large files or something along those lines.
I haven’t recorded a lot lately, but I’m wondering if it might have been an issue that’s exclusive to Windows too since I haven’t noticed anything similar since I converted my server to Linux.
I’m not having any tuner lock issues either, but I can’t say if it’s officially fixed.
Incidentally, perhaps of interest, a nostalgic user has made a CSS skin (Emby allows you to add customized CSS for Windows players in the settings), findable via forums and github, which apes Plex and seems pretty accurate look and feel to me. But that won’t affect Android or other non-Windows players.
The only thing I miss is having movie writers in the metadata, and to some degree live TV/DVR commercial skip - but (imagine this) 30 second advance/10 second rewind work instantly and exactly (and you can change those values to whatever you want), so skipping through commercials is actually as easy or easier.
This is just FYI. I hate seeing people bang their heads against the wall when there’s an alternative of just enjoying media.
Lately, I don’t get the option anymore to Watch From Start on my Roku stick for tv shows in progress. It just goes to live tv and I have to backup to the beginning manually.
Fixing by removing. Well, I guess that “works”.
I have been trying to see if this is resolved and the issue has been going on for years…The various posts in the forums just seem to be closed by Plex Employees as if they think its fixed…Well its not!
That Plex skin looks awesome. I got to try this out. Now I just have to figure out how to install it:)
Deal breakers with emby so far are the channel tuning time (2x as slow as Plex on my setup - AndroidTV players and FreeBSD server + HDHomerun) and the fact that their DVR is not a true DVR. The recording and live channel are separate. So for instance if you tune to a program that you are recording in livetv mode and try to go backward, it won’t work.
Hum, for me average tune time for Live TV - Plex 11 seconds / Emby(beta) 7 Seconds, With a Pi 4 server and a fire stick(4K) or win HTPC(plex only)
P.S. (only)4 NFL games were available in my area on Sunday, Emby recorded and played back all flawlessly (and with the improved ATSC 3.0 format) including the games in progress and in the one that I started while it was in “Extra/Padded time”
WIthin the Live TV section go to the Recordings tab and pick the recording in progress from there instead of selecting from the program on the Guide and you can play from the beginning, go backwards, etc. (Emby.)
It can take a moment to tune a channel if you come from somewhere other than Live TV, but once Live TV has loaded channel changing is fast in my experience and no buffering.
Thanks for the feedback - LiveTV switching for me in plex (when watching TV and selecting another channel) is ~4 seconds. emby does it in 7-8 (nvidia shield). Do you have a newer Beta for emby that may have been tuned?
I’ve gone to the recording tab and it works if you want to catch a recording from start (you can actually tune to the channel and choose watch from beginning and it will get you there). But there are time when you go to a channel, decide to watch live (for instance the news) and then want to go back because it’s being recorded and you can’t. Also if you go to recording and watch from start with Android TV, there is no easy way to jump to live (there is a bug and emby allows you to fast forward past the current time and then freezes).
Emby working for watch from start and allowing you to catch the game while in the ‘extra padded time’ is a joy - I tried it right away
but there are too many annoyances for the regular user that Plex does not have. If they can fix these, I’m buying the lifetime sub right away.
Guess we should get back to the original post…
…We shouldn’t be quibbling over how many seconds it takes to tune a station lets just say one or two is about as long as most people are willing to wait (that is on other threads).
Also I’m not pitching other product just showing that at least one other product does this fine.
Plex claims to do this but won’t fix what has been broken for a long time…
Guess the OP (Minxster) never thought he’d have almost 200 posts with no answer to the original question yet.
I’m with you - I guess I’m about done waiting for Plex to fix this. 200 posts since March and it’s still broken. The Android dev (devs?) can’t be that clueless so it’s a clear message that management does not care.
It’s time for refunds!!!
This is STILL irritating the $%#! out of me and my family.
tvheadend could possibly solve all recording issues and it has time shifting and can easily integrate into Plex with xTeVe and has many many 3rd party players eg: Kodi if one wishes to abandon Plex altogether. I just recently switched to it for my TV backend w/ Plex and I couldn’t be happier.
BTW it’s free.
@DaveBinM . I wonder if you would be able to let us know what sort of progress has been made with this problem.
What can Plex even say at this point? Until recently, I thought it was obvious that they needed to make a statement to the customers on the sad state of Live TV/DVR and what they plan to do about it. But now, the web player has been broken for weeks as well and I haven’t even been able to find acknowledgement of that problem. So the sad truth is that Plex now has zero credibility and making any sort of statement will probably do more harm than good. For me, I’ve waited 16 months for Plex to deliver something I can use. Instead, I’ve been banned when I’ve complained too vigourously and was forced to find another DVR solution because Plex just never worked. I want my money back, have asked for it and was denied.
It’s time for refunds but it seems that Plex would rather keep our money, continue to not deliver, ignore us and continue to reinforce their increasing reputation as an unethical company.
Please can we have an update on this @elan ? Any chance of you providing some early Christmas cheer and getting this fixed for the holiday season? Thanks.
8 months have now passed and still broken in the latest episode of this sad tale.
