DVR - Watch From Start - Why doesn't it work on Android TV clients?

I grew up in the 80’s when you had to wait for the VHS tape to stop recording before you could watch the programme. How much older will I need to get before this is fixed in Plex?

Just pointing out that this appears to have gone massively off the rails. I just would like Plex to provide a real update on the horrible situation with Live TV/DVR and what they plan to do about it. I certainly never said that it should be @elan that should do that. But there has to be someone who can. If there isn’t, well that’s a pretty big problem in itself.

Being Co-Founder automatically implies he has the ability to make things happen. It is, after all, his product and everyone except the other Co-Founder is below him.

Dunno what planet you live on where a Founder of a product has little ability to influence his own product. Plex is not a publicly traded corporation.

You guys do realize that if you just keep sniping at each other, that’s all that anyone is going to see when they come to this thread? No one is ever going to see or notice that a real explanation for all the problems was requested and never provided.

Agreed, and I’m sorry for my part in derailing this conversation. I’m as affected by this as y’all are; my $20 Walmart Onn Android TV box does not “watch from start” any better than your Fire TV and Shield TV clients. I’ll leave it at that, as much as I’d like to follow up on some other replies.

I have confidence that this will be addressed in time. Until then I abide.

Grow up. I’m not omniscient, and tend to comment more in places where I have actual data.

So… I know this is going to sound crazy, but just hear me out here. Why don’t you go find someone who does have that data and ask them nicely to reply here? Seems like that might be a better route than continuing to ignore your paying customers, and definitely a better route than making snide comments and just pissing people off further. I suppose for something like that to happen though you’d actually have to give a ■■■■ about your paying customers, so I guess I should know better than to even suggest such a thing.

@CodeCat5 , I get that people (including myself) are really frustrated with Plex. But I did already ask for that to be done in somewhat more respectful tone. I’m not sure that asking again in that way is going to help matters much.

Maybe the DVR program became way too messy and complicated and they couldn’t figure out how to fix all the bugs…so they decided to re-start from the ground up with a fresh architecture??

Maybe they’ve been silent for so long because it is going to be a big surprise

I agree with others, if you don’t want to be involved in making sure your software works correctly maybe you should hire someone to oversee that department, so you can tinker with upcoming features. There’s no problem with having leadership in those departments ,but as soon as you give up on your own software and look away from the problems, you can’t expect your team to have any faith in it either, as a business owner I know! That being said, I have seen the employees be more active with the live tv community in the past week or two. Don’t know if that’s going to be an ongoing trend or a fluke. I do see that Keith does not interact with the community, so I do thank you for interacting with us, it does mean a lot!

@sixones definitely knows the status of this problem along with everything else Android

He was also typing a response to my comment in this thread 28 days ago after @elan responded but he failed to post whatever he was typing. Yes, I seen you typing a reply only to run away from the conversation.

We can be civil if the problems to our paid software gets the attention it deserves. We are specifically talking about ANDROID here. This is on Plex.

Nobody at Plex thinks a thread almost one year old isn’t worthy? Apparently it’s a big problem so if you want us to essentially go away then fix it.

Isn’t it bad advertisement on behalf of Plex having a thread like this on your own forums? Do you honestly think this draws customers? I’m sure there are enough people pissed off about their Androids that we can keep this on the front page.

With a user base soooo passionate about your product (literally ex girlfriend crazy) you would think, maybe for a second, this BS can get dealt with for the people who LOVE and SUPPORT YOU.

Also, I hope all that work you are all doing on the new demuxer for Android is the end all be all and is something that will, moving forward, squash these issues flat on the spot. We wouldn’t know though :-/

With all the other distractions going on in this thread, I have to admit that I did appreciate the sentiments of your post. The main reason that I’ve been asking for a proper update from Plex is that I, too, think there is a surprise coming. Unfortunately, I think it will be a very different type of surprise than you’re hoping for. I hope you’re right though.

There might be something cool in the pipeline for the server software itself! One thing I can say is we’re definitely a passionate community!

Like most users that record and watch sports, I am very frustrated by this problem because it often spoils the result – when it goes live instead of to the start, you see the score or see something that gives away the result. So the best thing is to wait until the recording is completely finished – not what anyone is looking for in a DVR.

But to augment this retro VCR-like experience, I suppose I could try the latest Plex Shield device to avoid the spoilers – it’s a large piece of cardboard that you put over your TV screen while you rewind from the live position to the start of the recording – featuring the very latest in scotch tape technology.

You must remember to mute the sound as well.

Well, when I try to rewind to the beginning I just get the “Circle Of Doom” or a reboot. (Fire 4K)

I have a slightly different issue. I set up NFL to record with a 1 hour buffer on the end. If you go the game 15 minutes after it has ended, but still recording for another 45, how do you play it? It’s out of the guide, so that’s not an option. And it hasn’t showed up in TV Shows since it is still recording.

Yes, that particular bug/flaw in the UI affects all clients and has been reported multiple times over the past 3 years (including by me, again, last July), each time receiving the typical Plex treatment of ignore and close. On my post, I was specifically told (after two months of waiting for a response) that Plex has higher priorities. I would encourage any additional discussion on that particular stupidity to occur in my thread.

So I guess duct tape can’t fix everything.

I discovered this issue a long time ago. You are correct, if you added extra recording time at the end of a scheduled program, there is no place/nowhere to find that recording and start watching it.

Also, if you have been watching a game and the app crashes before you finish watching the game, but before the extended recording is over, again, you have no way to continue watching the game. You must wait until the recording completes.

Well, it’s been 8 days since I expressed a need for communication from Plex about the pitiful state of Live TV/DVR. I have not seen such communication.

Since 8 days ago, nothings has really changed. If anything, the PlexWeb 4.73.2 client is worse for Live TV than 4.72.1 – the progress bar and +30sec button are both back to being non-functional. Obviously nothing has changed for the AndroidTV play from start issue. I can’t even watch LiveTV effectively on my Windows machine that is my Plex Server since the web client and Plex For Windows continue to have significant issues.

When significant issues continue for many months and Plex won’t even communicate with us, it’s pretty hard not to attribute this to malice or deceitfulness.

So I am left wondering, like I was back in November, “Live TV/DVR Included With Plex Pass – How is this not a scam?”

Our voices have been heard. Keep it ruthless everyone!
