DVR - Watch From Start - Why doesn't it work on Android TV clients?

While there have been different issues over the years, it’s not that this one specific bug that has been around for years.

My personal experience and multiple threads in this forum do not agree.

You can have different bugs with similar symptoms, that doesn’t mean they’re the same :man_shrugging:

@DaveBinM - Thanks for coming back to me/us about this. I can appreciate that different bugs can creep into systems as time passes, meaning that the problems from a long time ago might not be the same problem as we’re all facing today. That said, the user experience is the same, in that there is an issue and playback is a problem. So the user’s perspective is that it’s the same issue that hasn’t been addressed previous.

So can I thank-you for dipping into this thread and taking up this problem and forwarding it on to the correct people. Updates on progress would be useful, if that’s possible.

Lastly, since you’re on this thread, what is the best way to actually report problems to hopefully get things moving to a conclusion? I’ve seen many people, like me, posting problems with seemingly no traction on the issue being taken up and/or not being forwarded on? What would be the best way to highlight issues in the future?

You would think with reoccurring symptoms over such a long period (even if not the same bug) would result in it being checked before each release to ensure it has not regressed again, if only out of embarrassment of it happening again.

It seems to be to many new versions and not enough testing. Frequently server updates are only in the beta channel for a couple of days before being released on us all. That’s not enough time for bugs to be reported let alone fixed.

Perhaps Plex should put some of that cash they just got injected with into an actual QA team…

I’m noticing this issue on my 2017 Shield TV as well

Any update? I’m still seeing the issue playing from beginning on both my Google TV Stick and 4K Firestick. More info and videos showing the issue here.

Having same issue on Nvidia Sheild.

It’s only been three months since it was reported. Give it another six months and maybe it’ll work again…

This is an issue for me as well using Nvidia Shield Pro 2019. Usually if watching TV show while still recording - I get the option to start from beginning. When I select start from beginning it starts at the current point but can “usually” rewind to the beginning.

Please don’t state things like this which have no basis in fact.

@elan You don’t want comments like that posted? Then prove everyone here wrong. Talk is cheap, and just a simple look over the forums history here clearly shows otherwise. Live TV on Android has been in a pitiful state for years and very little has been done to address it. I don’t know if your Android developers lack experience or if you just don’t believe in a QA team, but the amount of show stopping bugs that make it into the Android app (and remain for months if not years) is pathetic and embarrassing.

@CodeCat5 I understand your frustration so I just wanted to chime in! Although I do agree with you in terms of Android having its issues and a lot of the problems shouldn’t be going to the public build, I believe that it is being addressed. You have some employees that totally ignore you and some that are actively engaged and working on the issues. Calling out Elan is not going to fix it, he’s been hiring new people to actively squash bugs. Take a look at some of the employees posting releases and you’ll see they literally just started. I believe they have an internal list of issues in order of priority that I wish we had access to so we could see where things are on the list, but we don’t. In the past couple months the Android client has come a long way from being very unstable to being usable again. It does still have a long way to go but patience is important. Yes this bug has been going on for a very long time but I’m pretty sure it is on their list of things to do and with the addition of the new people they’ve hired I think they’ll get completed soon in my opinion. I still think we need a dedicated list of devices that have gone through rigorous testing and are known to be completely supported by Plex, especially for Android TV since there’s so many devices out there. More transparency also helps but plex is headed in the right direction just takes time now!

It’d be nice if they actually are going in the right direction, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Regardless, that’s still not a valid excuse for the past and the present, and it still doesn’t change the past. Plus it’s not like the issues in Android were an isolated incident, it’s been in a pitiful state for several years at this point.

Agreed but moving forward and actually addressing the issues is important isn’t it?

@CodeCat5 my last part of this rant and then I’m going to smoke some ribs. Honestly the lifetime pass, one time fee business model in my opinion is not sustainable. Maybe we don’t see the bigger picture (Financial wise) for his company. Maybe he had to do other things first to create additional revenue streams before he could hire more employees to make this possible to fix issues.

Honestly the lifetime pass, one time fee business model in my opinion is not sustainable.

I have no idea if it’s actually sustainable and profitable, but quite frankly, that’s not my fault or my concern. I’d just like the software that I purchased to actually work as advertised, but apparently that’s asking too much.

I’ll also add, if it’s not sustainable then why are they still offering it? I may not have a very high opinion of Plex and their staff, but I don’t believe they’re that stupid to keep offering it if it’s not benefiting them.

I’ve had the loop happen when disabling CC (Subtitles) on Live TV as well. Kinda steered clear of using it until a shield fix could resolve it

As another month slips by with no fix in sight it appears @elan main concern is his name may have been besmirched in the thread, rather than addressing the issue or providing any information about when it will be fixed. Yet he has plenty to say on apple and plex amp threads, that clearly effect products that he personally uses. Is it any wonder Plex Android users feel second class.

I note with interest the other thread that tracks this sorry tale starting all the way back in 2018 has been closed, not because it hasn’t been commented on for 3 months….if only! It appears the solution is not to resolve the issue, merely to bury it out of embarrassment.
