DVR - Watch From Start - Why doesn't it work on Android TV clients?

My bad I thought it was, there was no intention to mislead people.

Either way I’m out, happily migrated and my folder structure was imported without issue into Emby and last night I watched several recordings on Android TV while they were still recording without issue.

As I’m Plex pass lifetime it sits there to do a bit of series sync before they axe that feature soon.

Who knows maybe, just maybe they will fix the issues but for now it’s just not good enough for production standard.

The simple FACT that this problem has been going on this long is a complete FAIL with the Android devs. One of many problems with Android clients. Also, why’s the EPG scrolling so slow? Why will the client endlessly sit there with the buffer circle if a remote Live TV stream dies? Why doesn’t it gracefully exit back to the guide when this happens? It disappears from the dashboard and the client sits there trying to buffer.

Thought I would throw that in too.

In all fairness, the devs likely get very little say in what feature/bug/etc that they work on next. The real failure here should be attributed to people like @elan who do actually have control over what the developers work on. They have completely neglected their Android users by allowing this software to remain in such a pitiful state for so long.

I really only try to “Watch From Start” during NFL (football) season.

I hate having to watch commercials during football games, so I schedule games that I want to watch to be recorded. Then on the days of these games, I usually wait 60 to 90 minutes after the start time, so that I can “watch from start” and then skip through the commercials. It is also nice to be able to go back and re-watch plays that I may have missed or just want to see again.

Upon reading this thread, I was very concerned that I was not going to be able to do this now. Especially that NFL preseason is upon us.

So, to allevaite my fears, I did a test before writing this post…

I pulled up the guide and scheduled a program to record. I gave it about 60 minutes before I went down to the man cave where I have my nvidia shield setup with big screen projector.

I started everything up, opened up the plex app, found the recording that was in already in progress. I clicked the option to watch and was promptely asked if I wanted to start watching from the beginning or watch it live. I chose the beginning and the program started playing from the beginning.

I was able to fast foward past commercials as well as rewind and re-watch content.

So, at least for me, this is a non-issue. Watch from Start on Adroid TV client is working.

Watch from start on 8.21.2.27212 is NOT working for me. It still plays live.

Not working here either, but if you hit watch from start, then rewind then you can rewind all the way back to the start of the show… sort of has a 90s VCR feel to it, but works

Even more so if you have 60 or 90 minutes of extra recording time like you would likely have when recording sports. During those extra 60 or 90 minutes, Plex removes the playback UI from the TV Guide item. So you have to wait until the recording is completely finished before you can play it.

So, congrats to Plex for recreating a retro VHS-like experience where you have to wait until the recording is finished before you can watch.

How is this still not fixed?

I hope you are now at home and feeling better after your stay in hospital. Just wondering if any progress has been made on his topic?

I am home now, and feeling a little better (well enough to be home at least). We’re still investigating this issue, but finding the root cause has proven to be a little trickier than we’d like

Perhaps the Android devs should focus on fixing bugs before adding anything more to the app.

Great to hear you’re at home and at least improving if not completely better

Add another long term Plex user to the list of android users hoping to see this work again soon - it’s hard to sell Plex within the household when such major functionality is so unstable.

Suspect it is well past time to dedicate a few weeks in the dev’s timetable to sorting out issues like these.

@elan still nothing, give your users some feedback and be honest. If this is not a priority then say so but to keep everyone hanging on is just wrong.

Clearly, there is no link between the development planning to feedback time invested on bugs to resolve. For everyone just to be told we are looking at it no longer works on this issue.

Hey everyone I’ve been updated to version 8.22.0 which also includes an update to the exo player and rewinding and forwarding seems to be working again, I turned on new modern layout fyi

Anyone else tried the new version?

So from my trials this is what’s happening to me now.

Play from beginning or play from live starts playback at the live point.

However if you pause you can then scroll up to timeline and rewind to beginning then it plays without the loop.

So not perfect but better than the looped playback I had before.

Yes working for me to windows and HDHR’s, i was reading all these people claiming it is not working and i remember it worked when i tried it. I was thinking maybe it has stopped for me also, as i don’t watch while recording that often as i wait for plex to remove the commercials before i watch most of the time.

Yes. It seems to be and Android TV thing only. That’s why we are complaining.

So am I, china box running silmbox ATV. Windows server.

Add me as another sufferer! Native Shield does not work at all for anything over an hour long, it always starts live and will not rewind. It pseudo works from my iPhone if I chromecast it to my Shield. But if I try to skip commercials, it jumps all over the place, so not a great solution. Looking at the length of this thread, I highly doubt we will ever see a fix.
