Easy Play Next Eppisode On Roku

Greetings Team Plex!

We are still working with those Autistic children, and some of them just can not easily handle multi-step processes to complete basic tasks.

On the Roku box, Netflix will play a TV Episode, and at the completion of that episode will return to the TV show menu for that series, like MASH, but it will automatically advance to the next episode. i.e. episode 3 completes, and The Netflix screen takes you to episode 4. Then all the user has to do is press the ok button on the Roku remote, and episode 4 begins to play.

On your system you have to select episode 3 from the series menu, then you have to hit ok, then you go to the episode overview screen where you have to hit ok again to play the episode. When episode 3 completes you are returned to episode 3’s overview screen. To go to episode 4 you have to hit he back key, to return to the episode selection menus, then the down arrow to select episode 4, then you have to hit ok which will take you to the episode overview menu where you have to hit ok to play the episode.

This is way to many steps for an Autistic child. Let’s keep it simple.

The way you want it to work is exactly how it works if you press play on the episode from “On deck”

If playing from the series menu if you press play with the season highlighted it begins play with the first non-played episode or it picks up from where the last episode was stopped and plays continuously through the episodes until stopped.

For either of those to work independently for each user they cannot be logged onto Plex as the same user or Plex gets confused.

Watched status is tracked at the server not at the client so there is no way to do what you want unless each user is kept separate on the server.

Edit: You can reduce the keypresses at most points you mention by using play instead of OK. Having dealt with several autistic children I know that if they understand OK they can be pretty easily taught play.

Greetings Elijah!

Thank you for your kind response. I understand your thoughts completely, and I have seen that this example of functionality does exist in the system. The problem is that the children may fall asleep while watching a series, and the nice part about having a system stop after each episode is that you do not burn through episodes without them really being watched.

The only way to present the next episode so that only a press of “Play” is required is to use “On Deck.” From “On Deck” if you press “Play” on an episode then, after completion, the next episode is placed “On Deck.”

The only disadvantage of using “On Deck” is that if the episode played was not at the first position the next episode will be placed at the first position after the chosen episode plays. That is if you press play on episode 5 of a series that is in position 7 “On Deck” after it plays episode 6 will be at position 1 requiring that you arrow over to position 1 in order to play episode 6.

Of course if you are already at position 1 then after playing an episode all you need do is press “Play” to start up the next episode.

I actually use that feature of "On Deck to watch shows in rotation. That is if I play a show from position 4 and it completes the show that was at position three moves to 4 and simply pressing “Play” will play that show. Using that the shows in positions 1, 2, 3 and 4 will rotate through position 4 and I can play them in rotation.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (post-play screen w/ option to manually or automatically play the next episode)
