I’ve got a show that has embedded subtitles: they work fine when played off my local machine using GOMPlayer.
I’ve followed the guide here about enabling the embedded subtitles so that Plex doesn’t have to fully transcode the media (I want it to direct stream.)
and also download mediainfo here
(pay attention during installation, it comes with a ‘piggybacked’ installer which asks to install additional crapware. Make sure to set/clear the right checkboxes!)
Once it is installed, analyse the file, then go to:
File - Export - Text (Advanced mode)
You cannot play ASS subtitles in a web browser. The server will always transcode those.
Use either Plex Media Player or Plex for Windows/Mac to Direct Play those ‘advanced subtitle formats’ (due to the complex formatting which is possible with ASS).
If there is some Mac alternative for Subtitle Edit extracting those subs and making them plain UTF-8 srt files would be a LOT faster than burning in subs for an entire season… while destroying any quality they may possess… just sayin…
Also - the New Player is pretty spiffy - you won’t even be able to see any difference, in fact, you will probably prefer it when you discover it’ll Direct Play just about anything you throw at it.
ASS are text-based, so you shoudl be able to convert them into SRT easily.
However, this is a fan-sub. Those can be heavily stylized and go on sometimes in several places on the picture at once. So the result of the conversion can be ugly/unreadable.
