Am I missing a setting or? I’ve searched but not really found anything that tells me what/if I’m missing something. Please and thank you!
Which particular Plex client are you using to watch the video?
Is your Plex server strong enough to transcode video in real-time?
mediainfo XML of one file with the issue, please
If the subtitle is in SRT format, is it encoded in UTF-8?
Plex client on OSX El Capitan. Nott sure what else your telling me.
I know of 2 different plex clients which can run on OS X:
- There is the Server Manager, also called Plex Web, which runs in your internet browser.
- And then there is OpenPHT as a special “Home Theater” client which has a few special abilities.
Which one are you using?

Usually there is a setting that you can adjust on the specific episode screen. For example, in the Web or iOS interface it’s below the episode information underneath the selection for individual audio tracks.
Sometimes I’ve found that subtitles aren’t enabled when Plex transcodes an episode to a lower quality, regardless of what you pick.

Bingo! Found the setting for the movie in the Plex Server Web App. Works fine now. Thanks!
That must be an external SRT subtitle then.
But the XML says, it is not ‘selected’.
If you go to the preplay page of this movie in Plex Web, there is a line SUBTITLES and a dropdown selector beside it. Here you must select your subtitle.

I suggest using a client that is capable of Direct Playing your content. Web browsers have very limited capabilities.
OpenPHT or PMP are good.

Judging by the mediainfo, this video should direct play in any browser, as long as the SRT file is not malformed and conforms to the format specification.
All the user needs to do is to go to
Settings - Web - Player and set ‘Burn Subtitles’ to ‘Only Image Formats’

I’m well aware. I was generalizing as media can vary drastically.
