Emptied trash, but Plex deleted entire music library instead. Plex now refuses to re-scan most of my library

Just as the title suggests, I deleted one lousy song from my vast music collection from my computer, and when I got the “red trash can” symbol, I “emptied” the trash, only to discover it deleted my entire music library! It’s very upsetting, as all of the playlists and tweaking I’ve done for the better part of the last YEAR is now ALL GONE!! I KNOW I did not delete on accident, as you have to check the “Yes, I’m Sure” box before that even happens, and I did no such thing.

When I went to re-scan my library back into Plex and start from scratch, Plex only wants to scan a small amount of artists (all of which have multiple albums that I have neatly organized into proper folders on my hard drive) into the library. I had some 375 artists in the library before, and the first couple of times I tried, it scanned like 64 out of 375. Next time, it was 61. Next time, 51. Just now: 13. It seems to keep scanning less and less artists into the library.

None of my settings have changed either, unless Plex themselves changed them somehow.

Can anybody please give me some kind of clue as to why this happened out of the blue, and why exactly Plex all of sudden wants to snub the exact same library of music even though nothing about that library has changed at all? It’s definitely NOT a file naming problem, because as I said, my library has been just peachy for almost an entire YEAR up until YESTERDAY! Somebody? Anybody?? Lol…thanx!

Shut down your server immediately and restore one of the earlier backups of your database.

For good measure, check it for errors and repair it if necessary – even the backup copy: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201100678-repair-a-corrupt-database/

Verify that all your media storage drives are still available (and, if on Windows, have retained their drive letters from when you created the library).

I have absolutely no clue where to even begin to look up that kind of stuff. I have a Mac too, so that’s another thing. I read the page you posted, but I don’t understand any of it. Sorry.

Not to mention, that every time I attempt to re-scan my library and it fails, and I have to delete the incomplete library and start over, Plex doesn’t want to delete the library either. I literally have to restart my entire computer (sometimes multiple times) to get Plex to finally delete the music library and clear out.

Something is really, really corrupted here, and did nothing to antagonize the situation! I found where to download a copy of the earlier backup, but I have no clue where to put it on my Macbook. I simply have no idea where my Macbook Air stores the backup files. I’ve looked and I see nothing.

I am beyond frustrated, because it almost seems like an unsolvable situation I’m in. I may have to completely delete this account and start from scratch!! GRRRR!!!

I will also add I did find where Plex claims it keeps my backup directory, and there is simply nothing there. Plex says it is stored under: /Users>christopherscottzook>Library>Application Support>Plex Media Server>Plug-in Support>Databases. As you can see in the screenshots, there is no folder titled, “Library”. I am really at a loss here.

There is also nothing in any of the sub-folders that’s labeled Plex either. I’m starting to really think I’m going to have to delete all of my other media as well, and create an entirely new account and just start from scratch. I don’t think I’m going to find any clear answers here…

That doesn’t help at all. Don’t.

See https://support.plex.tv/articles/202915258-where-is-the-plex-media-server-data-directory-located/
It contains hints for MacOS as well.

Going to have to now. Tried what you suggested, and it erased EVERYTHING!!! I through with this thread. Thanks for all the “help”…
