I'd like to switch from Windows Media Center to Plex because Plex looks fantastic and has a whole bunch of great plugins. One thing is a showstopper though and that is Live TV. I'd like to have a guide and decide what channel to watch. As a settop box I have a dreambox. Enigma2 (thats the software running on it) provides an API for showing guide data, stream channels, schedule recordings and that essential stuff. So here's my question before I begin to develop a plugin. Would a plugin be capable of showing guide data und handling those streams? I've read in another forum that plex is not capable of handling these streams, but I don't see a reason for that.
So if anybody has an answer, please post it here. Thank you!
There is another thread regarding a possible Enigma2 based plugin for Plex here
Maybe you can contact the author and see if he managed to get to somewhere. I would be interested in such a plugin (I own a VU+ Duo)
Btw: I haven’t found any documentation on how to develop a 3rd party client for Plex (which this would basically be). I’ve only found documentation for the Plugin API. So how would you go about developing such a client? Can the Plex server be controlled via HTTP requests or something? Sorry to ask, but I am yet to install Plex on my new Linux based media server so I couldn’t check of there is any documentation.
Thanks for your reply. Actually I’m not trying to code a plex client for enigma2, but a plex plugin in order to get a Live TV integration into plex client. That plugin would connect to the STB, get the guide and stream the channels. The client already is available for PC, Mac, Linux,…
I’ve just tried to connect the dreambox as a tuxbox. Bouquets and channels show up correct. Streaming works for SD channels already. All that’s missing is streaming of HD channels and an EGP with the possibility to schedule recordings.
I´ve found that you can add a network location in PMC.
Typ C in the Vide channels section, “C” Add Video Source>Browse>add network location. Add a tuxbox protocol pointoing to your DB IP. Fill in all required fields,
I got this to work and was able to se all my channels by maps, but after that my box gave up. And I couldnt do it again, probably something with my DB and I will give it another try tonight with a new flash.
If you’ve got a decent API to work with, you should be able to create some semblance of an EPG with capabilities for controlling the recorder. I doubt you’ll be able to make it look or behave exactly like the EPG from the set-top box itself but, if functionality is your main concern, you should be covered.
I’m actually coding a PMC/Dreambox plugin, which I think you want the other way around… need some details from Elan et al on talking to a PMS (initially without myPlex) rather than analysing net traffic and hacking up something myself… Elan, can you ping me point me in the right direction please?
Not shure why we need enigma2 tuxbox devices to stream dvbs/s2 content to PMS
if we have some other exotic features such as Mythtv, with a nice EPG , all it takes is a DVBs/s2 compatible card with the latest linux kernels which contains pretty much all the necessary gear v4l and other dvb drivers needed to run your dvbs card.
if u want to go into payperview content provided u have a legal sub all it takes is some minor tweaks with sasc-ng in order to create a virtual loop driver to work syncronized with your h/w dvbs device card and voilla everything will run smoothly.
Imagine u can even create TV app plugins for specific channels.
Needles to say that with a dvbs linux compatible card and the right linux tools u can even stream 1 full Transponder TP lets say average 15 to 20 channels in same TP, u can actually stream it and split each channel vpid etc… into different TCP ports and broadcast it via Plex…
Well to be honest there´s no limits here just use your imagination.
Whilst with running a TUXBOX client u are hooked up to only 1 channel at the time for streaming.
whilst with a dvb card u can actually filter a complete TP and re-stream it with plex with specific channels plugins.
anyways guys good luck with your studies and findings there
by the way in case u want to setup a righ linux open source htpc with dvb card, best choice will be
Plex media server in onde independant machine
XMBC media center linux+mythtv+dvb card+plex client plugin for xbmc, it runs great no hassle…just need patience to install everything up.
The reason why a “Dreambox channel” would be (for me) awesome is simple. Whoever, as me, already has an enigma2 machine in his/her homenetwork could watch TV everywhere in the world through Plex clients (e.g. on the iPad) without the need to buy another card nor to make those “minor tweaks” you write about which I fear would be far from “minor” for anyone as dumb in technical matters as me…
I also want to have this feature to get my tv functions into my PMS. My setup is as Follows -->
1 Centralised mac with PMS where all my media is located.
1 HTPC running Debian Wheezy with HTS TVHeadend for TV and XBMC as a frontend to that with pleXBMC as an addon for watching my plex media. (I also have a DM600 PVR Enigma1 box to my tv)
So to the point I would gladly have a TV addon for PMS that supports importing my channels from TVHeadend and play them in my plex devices from my server. Or have a plugin that can import from Enigma 1/2 devices. The best senario is that the plugin supports both and even other backends as mythtv etc. etc. .
For the time beeing I am stuck with using 2 different clients namely XBMC and Plex and that is something I don’t like at all. I would if I could code, try to make a TVheadend addon. So if anyone has the ability to make this happen I would greatly donate some money trough paypal or something like that.
Sry for highjacking the thread. But since it is under the same feature but for 2 different backends I thought it should not be a problem.
Oh and one other thing I know there is a Eye TV plugin that is working pretty ok but its main problem is requires A Mac, OSX , EYETV and some other stuff to work. But It would be great if Eye TV also works within the plugin so there is one Plugin for any type of TV solution you have. I know this is really really big and heavy stuff so it is probably best to take it in baby steps.
Hello,
I have a vu+ ultimo enigma2 device (5 different satellites + two different modules). I am regularly recording programs and serials from TV channels (SD/HD) on a spinning hard drive in the vu+ ultimo enigma2 satellite receiver box. I want to watch these recordings (*.ts) from other devices. I have LAN/INTERNET connection between these devices. When we talk about LAN: Satellite receiver is located room in room A and other TV with just DLNA + vu+ solo se v2 (single satellite without any module) in the kitchen.
1- Tried to watch the recordings from the TV in the kitchen over DLNA however DLNA media player is stacking too much when I try to watch HD recordings. (minidlna server is running on the vu+ ultimo). I can watch properly some movies but I don’t know what’s the difference at all.
2- I want to watch the recordings from my card infotainment system which doesn’t support *.ts format either. I don’t want to copy over *.ts files from enigma2 box to a PC and convert it to DIVX with divx converter. Because I don’t have a dedicated PC for that purpose in my house. I am looking for a device does transcoding and conversion for me automatically. Let’s I have an external hard drive seagate wireless which syncs the full *.ts content with enigma2 box however I also want the seagate converts it to a usable/playable format (avi, mkv, mpg, mp4, divx) on my car infotainment system.
I’ve heard that plex has a solution for that with subscription. Appreciate if anyone has got a recommendation or experience to resolve that issue before.
