I have a 5 years old Samsung 7 Series UHD TV, which happily plays any content I have from Plex. Because I wanted to experience 4k TV, I bought a Panasonic TX-40JX850 to upgrade, but although it’s connected to my network with a physical cable, is decidedly erratic playing back various Plex content, and sometimes won’t seem to play at all (the same erratic-ness happens with a wireless connection, too.) So I’ve reinstalled the older Samsung.
Ideally, I’d prefer the Panasonic as its newer technology. Does anyone know why this shaky playback in the new TV happens, and what I can do about it? Thanks.
Could be a bandwidth problem. Most smart TVs only offer a 100 Mbps Ethernet port. That won’t be sufficient to stream full-quality 4K videos (keep in mind the average bitrate of a video can be significantly lower than its actual maximum bitrate).
Not sure if your Samsung had a better port or you were playing lower-bitrate files?!
The Plex app on your TV will not support 10-bit HEVC video, and, by extension, HDR video. Also, if any video needs transcoding, it will be limited to 4 Mbps.
Plex supplies the app to Panasonic, who publishes it in their app store. Any TV can download the app (there may be geographical restrictions). However, unless your model is on the list approved by Panasonic, it will have the limitations mentioned above.
If you want to watch HDR video via Plex on your Panasonic, you will need an external streaming device such as an Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon FireStick, etc.
