When installing following the instructions in the wiki for ATV2 connected via ethernet to OSX (Mac Mini that I'm using as an itunes server), I am getting the following error in Terminal.
DNSServer : Failed to create socket on UDP port 53: [Errno 48] Address already in use
PlexConnect : DNSServer not alive. Shutting down.
Does anyone know what might be causing this (I have a very limited knowledge of terminal)?
Cheers, Brett
Sounds like your Mac Mini is already running a DNS server or something else on port 53.
You can check to see what's on 53 with something like:
sudo lsof -i :53 | grep LISTEN
Thanks. Will try that, although the mini hasn’t got anything special installed. I only really use it as an iTunes server at the moment.
Cheers, Brett

Just ran this and it returned this:-
named 114 root 20u IPv4 0x5b821c5e606fd3e9 0t0 TCP 192.168.2.1:domain (LISTEN)
You must have either bought it or installed the server version of OSX at some point.
Even if e.g. you upgraded from Lion server to Mountain Lion client the DNS server will still be running.
You need to turn it off (unless you are an advanced user and know how to configure your DNS server and use the advanced setting in PlexConnect to use your own instead).
Sorry but it's running OSX 10.8.3. I only bought it a few months ago brand new and I know for certain that it's not the server version. I've also never installed the server version. I've only installed itunes, utorrent, handbrake & plex.
Could this be anything else at all?

It is bind, the DNS server.
Try running the following in terminal:
sudo serveradmin fullstatus dns
Just ran that and it returned this:-
Bretts-Mac-mini:PlexConnect-XML_templates brett$ sudo serveradmin fullstatus dns
Password:
sudo: serveradmin: command not found
Bretts-Mac-mini:PlexConnect-XML_templates brett$
Did you enter your password?
Yes I did (It just shows blank)
Yeah it doesn’t give feedback.
You are definitely running a DNS server though:
https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/named.8.html
You need to disable it if you want to run PlexConnect (or if you now how to configure it you can use it instead and disable the PlexConnect one; this is really only for advanced users who now what tey are doing though).
Tbh I do not know how you disable it on OSX without the GUI tool but you can probably find guides on Google.
Something or someone must have installed it though.
Thanks. I do appreciate your help.
It's very strange indeed.... I wouldn't descibe myself as an advanced user when it comes to OSX by any means (I'm learning). I do have an understanding of computers though, having administered a corporate (Windows) network for the last 20 years. I think I'll have to do some googling regarding a DNS server on OSX.
When I checked what was running on port 53, did this result provide any information on the issue?
Bretts-Mac-mini:PlexConnect-XML_templates brett$ sudo lsof -i :53 | grep LISTEN Password: named 114 root 20u IPv4 0x5b821c5e606fd3e9 0t0 TCP 192.168.2.1:domain (LISTEN)
“named” is the process name for Bind, the DNS server.
I have no idea why it is running if you have never installed the server component.
If you look at some of the server threads you should be able to find info in using your own DNS server, although you will likely have to setup the name resolution by terminal in your case.
Using my own DNS server sounds complicated.
I phoned Apple support a couple of hours ago and spoke with them about DNS. They basically said that it shouldn't be there but have given me something to try to test whether there is DNS installed. I'll try these things tonight when I get home from work and I'll post my findings here.
Cheers, Brett
Cool.
If you post your findings and how to disable the DNS server it would be very helpful for others.
OK, So I spoke in depth with a top level Apple expert last night and even to him, it was difficult to understand how a Mini running OSX10.8.3 can have a DNS Server running. We renamed the "System Configuration" folder, restarted the Mac and restested. The DNS Server now is not existant.
I'll get around to trying to install Plex Connect tonight.
Cheers, Brett
Hello I have just joined this forum for this very issue. I find myself in the same situation as Brett05. I purchased a mac mini server with 10.7 server with grand plans of hosting my own email. This never occurred and then I just purchased an ATV3 last week and wanted to install Plex Connect. After much fluffing around I discovered it couldn't run on server so I updated to 10.8. I have been trying again to run the PlexConnect.py file an get the same message as started this thread. I guess this now means I have to find out how to turn off the DNS server as well. When someone works this out can you please post on this thread so I can also hopefully get up & running as well. PS I don't know anything about linux but and do know how to follow instructions to type into terminal. I have also been using macs for 10 years but only on the front end so I know my way around system preferences well enough.
SInce I didn't have much on my mac mini except Plex I decided to reinstall a clean version of 10.8. The install went fine but I just tried to reinstall plex and it wouldn't get me past the settings page
I have the log files as described but is this the correct place to post them. Please feel free to bump this post to where it should be if necessary.
Sorry forgot to attache the files.......

slash.dash - this doesn't seem to be related to PlexConnect (interfacing aTV) at all. I would try getting help in either the PlexMediaServer/MacOS or the Plex/Web section. To be honest, I have no idea were to start digging here...
