I currently have a Sony VW695ES using a Emotiva XMC-2 Receiver and the Nvidia Shield Pro to access Plex. I am running the plex server on my synology.
I am having the oddest problem, I have tested it and confirmed it only happens when using Plex. It does not happen using any other streaming app on the Nvidia Pro. When watching a movie or TV Show on plex, when I want to escape out of said show my projector throw’s up a HDMI error. It tells me it does not see a HDMI device(no more picture). The only way to get back to the projector seeing a HDMI device is for me to turn off and on the Nvidia Pro. If I do that I am able to get back to the home screen of the Nvidia Pro and then access Plex to start a new movie\show. Its infuriating and I am hoping its a quick fix and others have had experience. I updated to latest version of Plex server and Nvidia Pro but it did not correct it. Let me know if any of you have any thoughts or ideas for me to try.
Great question as I have not played with any of those setting. I am at work however is there one I should try over the other? When I get home I will and can try both. I am fairly new in using plex let alone in a HT environment.
I’d turn them both off to start with to see if you experience the issue. If you don’t experience the issue, then enable them individually to see if one or the other cause the problem. Then, move on to both enabled.
The Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) can perform all the refresh rate / resolution switching for you internally.
I mention this because projectors typically have a very limited range of acceptable input resolution and refresh rate.
This having been said, in the Plex app,
(Advanced Video settings)
Turn off Refresh Rate switching
Turn off Resolution Switching
Now, upon next restart of the Projector and Shield:
The Shield and Projector will negotiate an acceptable rate to sustain HDMI
When the Plex app starts to play video, it will not attempt to change resolution or refresh rates .(which might be to select something the receiver/projector can’t do.)
When done playing , it won’t change the resolution again (which is where you have been seeing the failure )
I ran home for lunch made the changes. Once they were both unselected I rebooted everything the only thing that appears to have changed is when I try to leave the movie (while in Plex) the screen goes black, (sometimes it flickers the next screen) then I get the no HDMI found error. However now when I turn the NVidia pro off and back on again it keeps me in plex where I left off where before it would continue to show me the no HDMI error until I navigated to the Nvidia pro home screen. Any other thoughts?
I would work through the settings in the following order:
Shield main video output (Pic 1) first. Set this to match the best/desired resolution of the projector.
– The Shield will test the resolution before allowing you to keep it.
– When you go to the “Resolution” and click it, you will be given a list of choices.
– If the projector is 4K capable, it is extremely important to have 4K-rated cabling.
– If it’s Dolby capable - select that too (if you want to play Dolby Vision content)
Advanced display settings allows you to do exactly as the wording states. I recommend setting these as I have them
– Match content color space IF the Projector is HDR capable
– Display HDR content – (if appropriate)
Lastly, set the Plex app as I show here. (which I believe you’ve already done)
I made all the changes and nothing corrected my challenge. Its is such an odd situation as when using any other app on Nvidia pro I have zero issues. I am going to pick up a HDMI Cable and replace my current one that goes from the Nvidia Pro to my receiver. Cant hurt to give it a try. If you have any other thoughts let me knw. I was also thinking of uninstalling plex app and reinstalling it.
Not only the one from the Shield to the AVR but ensure the one from the AVR → TV is also up to spec as well.
(nothing is gained if HDCP 2.2 from Shield->AVR when the AVR->TV is HDCP 1.4))
I was able to 100% fix the challenge by reinstalling the plex app on the shield. Have not had an issue since the re-install. I never purchased a new cable and I made no new setting changes once I reinstalled. Been working for 3 days straight. Thank you for all your help!
