Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 - lost true 4K/HDR playback

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033 (QNAP)
Player Version#: Latest NVIDIA SHIELD TV Plex Player version available in Google Store

Sometime in the last few weeks, Shield updated my Plex version. Since then, I have lost the ability to truly playback the 4K/HDR content in the right way that may TV sees it. I know this, because on the LG OLED (B7a) the screen goes black, then comes back with an “HDR” or “VISION” (Etc.) icon at the top right. This is no longer being displayed.

I will add that netflix still work just fine for it, so it seems to be plex specific.

Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone advise how to troubleshoot or fix? I would rather revert versions but I also can’t figure that out at this stage!

Thanks!

Are you sure there is nothing in between the QNAP server and the Shield which is not compatible with latest HDMI version needed for 4K HDR?

I had similar problem from PLEX server to Shield to LG CX OLED (through Denon amp) when I had a Sony headphone HDMI box for wireless 7.1 headphones in between them.

The box is not compatible with latest HDMI and so would strip HDR information from stream - I only got 4K SDR to OLED then.

As soon as I removed this box from middle of chain I got 4K HDR to TV - everything else in my chain is latest HDMI including latest 8K HDMI cables connecting all.

It really is a PITA that some HDMI devices strip latest metadata like this… it’s like they designed HDMI to obsolete devices and make more money…

What does your Server Dashboard look like when playing the file? Is it transcoding or direct play?

I ended up deleting the app and reloading it and setting all my settings again, seems to be functional now. No clue what happened to be honest, but I didn’t change anything else… so I’ll blame the app for now at least. My next thing was going to be messing with refresh rate/resolution settings in plex, and then maybe the HDMI. But again since it worked in all other apps it didn’t seem to be a problem outside of plex itself.

By the way, it was always listed as “original” and direct play. So I know it wasn’t transcoding at least.
