Exclude/Specify Certain Clients

Would it be possible to add a feature to exclude clients or from playback.

I really don’t like clients using the browser for obvious reasons (transcode). Obviously i have told people not too but people are people lol. It would be nice to specify playback clients only.

Thanks.

This way, if you want to not include a specific client, for whatever reason, you could… I don’t want to support something, I exclude it. If I want only a specific client, that’s the only one I allow access to…

Great idea. Makes support easier for the admin. Less headaches, with fewer clients…

I’d consider this an exercise in futility.

You want to exclude certain clients because you want to avoid transcoding, right?
This approach has only a chance of success if all of your clients are on the same local network as the Plex server (wired) and none of the clients needs any subtitles.

If you have remote clients, all they need to do to invoke the transcoder is to set the quality on their side lower than the file already is. This happens with any client.

The same applies to subtitles. If the user selects a subtitle that the client cannot display natively, (which for most clients means all bitmap based subs like VobSub, PGS) the transcoder kicks in to ‘burn in’ the requested subtitle into the video picture.

Understandable. I think my clients arent exactly technical. So I’m not
worried about them forcing transcoding. Transcode was just an example.

Mine is more geared towards users who hardly understand the difference
between plex web and plex home theatre.

If there are no technical reasons (like limited cpu resources), let them use what they are comfortable with, IMHO.
Of course PHT is the better client if you want the maximum quality and least amount of transcoding, but many a PC user will prefer the web client because he wants to use a mouse.
Some ppl just can’t be bothered…

That is one of the reasons too technical usage e.g. nas
