Explain the audio process to me, please

Server Version#: 1.15.4.994
Player Version#: latest as of yesterday from Playstation (4) store

Hi,

First, I don’t care if my Denon receiver lights up and displays Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD MA, or any other high-definition audio formats.

I used to listen to SACD and hi-res audio off of physical discs.

Now, I want to enjoy high-def audio with the ease of Plex server and player. I have quite a bit of hi-def music and some movies with high-def audio.

My server is on a MacOS High Sierra machine. Older Mac Pro, but with pleeeenty of power. I know passthrough won’t happen from a Mac machine. Again, I don’t care about passthrough.

So, who/where does the processing of unpacking high-def audio occur? Who unpacks DTS-HD, for example and sends LPCM to my Denon receiver? The Plex server on my Mac Pro? The Plex player on my PS4?

I have PS4 audio output set to LPCM, by the way.

And finally, with the setup above, am I getting the full quality of my hi-def music or movies audio even though it’s not sent to receiver as bitstream?

Unfortunately, my receiver doesn’t show detail of bitrate of received PCM. It only shows:
PCM
48kHz

Thank you all!
Phlex
