Hi!
I was wondering on which platform Plex Media Player (excluding Windows) can play movies with DTS-MA and Dolby Digital HD out?
(Hope the get the answer from a Plex developer).
My goal is to switch my Mac mini Server with a Promise Pegasus R4 to a QNAP. Want to know if it’s worth it because I want to play movies with top notch audio quality.
Thank you in advance!

You don’t need a developer to answer this question. OpenPHT / PHT / PMP / Nvidia SHIELD TV all support this. I’m sure there are more.
But not when PHT or PMP run on a Mac.
Apple doesn’t support bitstreaming better than plain old AC3 and DTS over HDMI.
Even a Raspberry Pi gives you better sound over HDMI than a apple client.
You can try the embedded version of OpenPHT or PMP, if you have the compatible hardware for them.

It can still passthrough the high def audio via LPCM.
Is there a setting within PLEX Media Server or PLEX Media Player to make sure audio is being transmitted in LPCM?

It all depends on the client. The client tells the server which audio formats it understands / which the user prefers. The the server simply obeys.
Some clients can deliver LPCM, if your AVR understands it.
At least the ‘grown up’ clients Plex Media Player and Plex HoimeTheater can ‘bitstream’ LPCM over HDMI. All other formats are converted accordingly and automatically.
PMP and PHT are special in a way: they don’t need the server to do that. They can perfectly well convert the audio themselves.

Just make sure Exclusive mode is set and none of the audio options are checked (DTS / AC3 etc)
Thank you for your answers. I really appreciate. Someone tested the Apple TV (4th generation) to see if it support the LPCM for the HD audio? I read Apple support 7.1 channels (and maybe LPCM) now with the latest update.

If it supports LPCM at all, which is unlikely, it doesn’t mean it will passthrough HD audio AS LPCM on Apple TV. OS X yes but on Apple TV I’d bet money it doesn’t.

It will not. HD Audio tracks will be transcoded to AC3 for AppleTV 4.
Wow quite a limitation with mac it seems! I did not know that. I run PHT and PMP on windows running on an older gen NUC in my theater and both pass through DTS-MA and TrueHD 7.1 just fine.
