Export Music Metadata

I have spent over 20 years keeping my music collection organized with star ratings and what equates to “moods” in Plex. Currently all the data I need is stored in the music files themselves. The result is that even as I’ve moved to different players over the years, all my hard work has traveled with the files so I can re-create smart playlists based on mood and rating.

I’ve been wanting to move online for a while, but none of the music streaming services let me keep my music organized like this… except perhaps Plex. I already use Plex with my NAS, and the “mood” tags look perfect, and I can see that it should be fairly straightforward to migrate all my star ratings and moods into Plex. What may be even cooler is that it looks like I can use other services like soundiiz to sync Plex playlists with YouTube Music or Spotify, so then I’d really be set!

However, my hesitation is that once in Plex I’m not seeing a way to keep future ratings and moods tied to the files. So if I continue with my meticulous organization of my music, I’m not sure if I’d ever be able to export that out of Plex. Even if I could export playlists to something like iTunes, that would be enough because I could always put the music back into iTunes and then use the playlists to quickly retag and rate all my music.

It’s feeling more and more like if I want to move online I’m going to have to give up this method of organization… but I hate to loose what feels like a lifetime of painstaking organization work.

So… does anyone know if there is a way to export playlists from Plex to iTunes, or save ratings and moods to the files themselves, or any other creative solution that would allow me to confidently migrate into Plex and maintain my music organization? Any ideas would be wonderful.
