It would be great to have read / write functionality for star ratings so that a) whenever a star rating is set in iTunes, plex music section will pick up that change when updating the music section and b) iTunes would add the star rating which has been set in plex.
IIRC (been a while, ten years so far) we used to do sync from Plex to iTunes in the iTunes channel. But these days, we generally assume that once you’ve come to the light side of Plex, you’re here to stay. I made the leap from iTunes a few years ago, right after we added all the Premium Music features, and I haven’t looked back since.
Thanks for your thoughts on this, Elan. Not biased, but won’t solve my use-case.
I manage my music in iTunes and from there have plex scan the music folder. Since iTunes has a ton of shortcomings, I do love Plex. But music managing capabilities won’t suffice to replace iTunes. Since I do rely keeping music metadata in sync with a third software Mixxx as well as keeping more than a single mac in sync with the music structure and metadata, being siloed into a walled garden named Plex isn’t helpful for my use case.
So giving users the freedom to be on top of their own media is important to me. Mixxx is working on read / writing star ratings. They just recently added read / write metadata. Which is awesome. Mixxx e.g. does BPM analyses (well it’s a DJ software, right) and writes that info back to the files metadata so it then ends up in iTunes / Plex. That is awesome and imo the way to go with metadata.
Totally hear what you’re saying; it would take some careful thought, as we’re careful now to treat your media as read-only precious, and explicitly don’t write to it (many even run Plex with only read-only access to the media).
