This is a feature specific to PlexWeb intended for sharing individual videos or a specific TV series. I have been in the situation where I want to show someone a series or video but do not want to go through the process of getting them setup with plex or teaching them to navigate plexWeb (even though it is quite simple).
Instead I suggest a sharable link that could be created to share a video/series/season that would take them straight to a player bypassing all the navigation.
A potential issue is abuse especially with cloud streaming support. To work around this, I suggest any/all of the following:
- Plex Pass feature only
- Limit number of shared links that can be created per month
- Finite lifetime on all links (e.g. only active for 1 week)
- Limit number of views per link
- Limit number of simultaneous streams per link (e.g. 1-2)
- Allow management of links (e.g. a page that displays all created links and ability to retire a specific one)
This can be expanded to photos and music as well.
