I would like to share a movie weighting over 3GB to someone to watch. It is a movie I took on my phone and which is available on my Plex media server.
A feature like this would help a lot.
This request comes up occasionally and they all end up closed. This was the most popular previous request (there were many duplicates); the last comment is fairly telling:
The short version of that comment is that that request was closed because Plex is not a file sharing app.
Looks like the topic was closed every time. This is probably why the search results didn’t returned any results.
Something secured and fair can definitely be done. Just some more thought have to be put on this.
I can think now at password protected links, one time watch, limited time availability, limited number of simultaneous access.
You can revoke a share or share only individual items with users who have a Plex account. Creating the kind of public links you’ve been describing is going beyond what Plex seems to consider fair and secure — and most likely not threatening to their business model.
Plex have clearly stated in that other thread that they have no current plans to change this. Therefore I’ll close this thread with a reference to the above statement mentioned by philipsw.
