Feature Request: Add facial recognition and support tagging of faces

+1 for this! Nextcloud has a plugin that can do this.

Fix auto-tagging first

What are you waiting for !! Auto face detection + raw editing capabilities :pray::pray:

Today’s news that the photo upload feature will be removed point to Plex distancing from photos altogether. This is probably good in order to focus on video streaming. Over the years it has seemed more and more that Plex was becoming a kitchen sink, which is never good for software.

So we can forget about this at all… I think it’s time to migrate photo libs to another local service… So… Any recommendations?

Plex’s narrowing of focus is a good thing in the long run. I’m not sorry to see photo upload go because it’s easily done by 3rd party programs and other custom solutions.

My own process is to upload images from my phone to amazon S3. That’s all I need to do. They get pulled down onto my plex server with a simple cron job and added to plex. All this works much better than the (ex) plex feature did.

So regarding facial recognition, I think it’s pretty unlikely to happen given today’s announcement. I’m working on my own autotagging solution in any case.

And I’m still 100% onboard with plex’s photo management offering. Any gaps in functionality can be fairly easily filled in with a few different point solutions.

Just because they’re getting rid of photo upload, from phones/tablets and other devices, does not mean they’re completely abandoning photos.

The photo library is easily the best thing after Movie/TV/Music streaming libraries. A lot more people use it over News, Podcasts and Live TV.

Can you guys give some updates on this feature or reasons as to why it’s not possible? It’s a fairly popular requested feature and would be a major Plex selling point now that Google Photos is removing its free hosting.

I’d either like to see this feature, or an API that lets other people add this feature. Would renewed support for plug-ins do this?

Good question. I’m working on some autotagging tools and long story short you should be able to make it work with plex API alone.

Plex has developed itself out of the easy streaming service. Several years ago Plex was the only streamer around. Today there are many like Emby who has passed Plex and left them in the dust. Emby shows cast portraits without issue or extra setups. Collections just work. Unlike Plex who does collections of 1 and has bugged the collections feature with it’s updates. Emby is easier, cleaner and has features that just work. It’s a shame Plex really screwed up there app big time. Even after a clean install Plex can’t get many of their features to work. Good by Plex.

I am with Water monster…

I posted a.few.months back that music and photos should be a priority. I really do not care for yet another rip off of Pluto with ads. If that is the future, I’ll need to look at another home media tool that has better integration I need…

+1 for facial recognition.

Another one for facial recognition please.

This would be a a game changer. So would being able to upload the photos from my phone to my server.

Another one for photo facial tagging - this would be a huge addition & would allow me to use Plex for all of my media.

Pretty sure this one is DEAD, with the loss of picture upload from mobile automagically. I hope the team is not moving away from photos all together.

+1 for facial recognition.
