[Feature Request] Add support for AMD's Video Core Next encoding

Yes please, so I can drop my Ryzen 9 for better use than Unraid server/Windows 10 Gaming VM. With a proper quality when HW transcoding, I could just throw in Ryzen 2200G that I have somewhere in my drawers and have my desktop PC work only as it’s meant to be used and not take half of my resources as a server.

Today marks one month since my initial posting with no sign of first contact or show of interest from the Plex Team for me, a new paying Plex Pass user. Shame on you, Plex development team!

Same problem for me. I’m waiting for some time now for HW Transcoding on AMD APU/GPU’s.
Yes i have plex-pass and i own a Ryzen based server.

Hopefully they’ll add the support soon.

Maybe take a look at this Got HW Transcoding to work with libva/vaapi on Raden APU (Ryzen 7 4700U)

Thank you @mauimauer. Going to give that a go on the new server build.

Btw. There are other alternatives to Plex as well:

Yeah, there are alternatives, but for many Plex is the media server of choice. It should just work and use the HW capabilities exposed by VAAPI. Works great even for HEVC.

I don’t get it: there are so many people with Plex Pass, and they don’t get easy to implement software features… Why is that? I’m not paying the Plex Pass to not be able to play my media

“Should work” and “does work” are two alternate universes for Plex. They use some flea-bitten custom-cobbled broken fork of FFmpeg. Hardware acceleration in main branch FFmpeg in Windows and Linux for AMD graphics hardware works flawlessly. But as for Plex? It’s a dumpster fire.

That’s a long time without any update on the topic. To be honest we should try to get more votes, at the moment it’s in top 30 requested features, and the most requested features have almost 10x more votes <_<

Like a user noted on Reddit, I would likewise be willing to pay for Video Core Next support as an added feature. I would much rather see this is a pay-for feature than Plex Arcade. By the way, around 100 votes were added today alone after posting around about this feature request in the r/PleX, r/htpc, and r/Amd subreddit groups. Many people are wanting proper AMD hardware encoding support!

Given major NAS manufactures like Synology are releasing AMD based systems now I think this is a MUST.

It would be great if they did that

Seriously just the fact that they haven’t is kind of appalling.

I wouldn’t be surprised that they were given “seed” money by Intel on the pretense that they don’t put AMD decoding functionality in for X amount of years.

The crazy thing is that Plex came from a Mac version of XBMC/Kodi. Which if the device would of had a video card it would have been AMD. They probably did all of the original coding with Mac Minis or Macbooks that would only have the Intel CPU in them. When it came time for every other type of OS support. AMD decode wasn’t a desired or needed feature. So they just haven’t put the needed resources towards it.

Now it’s 2021 with AMD being in the place they are. This needs to be done sooner than later. Heck it should have been started not long after the launch of the second gen Ryzen processors.

Let me also emphasize Windows here (besides Linux) because, while hardware encoding has already mostly worked on Windows platforms for AMD hardware, there also has been a long-standing unaddressed hardware encoding bug on the Windows platform since 1st generation Navi (e.g. RX 5700) came out in mid 2019, as well as any subsequent products including Ryzen 4000 series APUs (I use a Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G). Navi and Ryzen 4000 “Renoir” APUs have a newer version of Video Core Next (2.0 and 2.2, respectively) which, when used in combination with Plex’s customized build of FFmpeg, results in clouds of multicolored pixel noise which does not occur in non-Plex implementations of FFmpeg (e.g. Handbrake). This Windows specific bug has been a reported issue in the Plex forums since Navi released in mid 2019 and has yet to be addressed.

AMD is no longer the alternative choice for CPUs. Video transcoding should be supported

I’m only runnning AMD in my house right now, except for my craptop that was pre Ryzen era.
I would love AMD transcode, not only CPU, but also GPU.
