[Feature Request] Allow Plex media server to sleep/wake properly including DVR recordings

This has probably been asked before, but I would like to ask for Plex Server to sleep and wake up including the ability to do this for DVR recordings.

It would wake on request from any app and sleep again after a time when not in use. The sleep could be done by the operating system. This would mean that a process in Plex would need to be present for Windows (or other) to notice and stay awake - not currently possible when recording live TV.

This would save power and money.

This really needs to be added. WOL would be incredibly handy as well. However, I think I can take care of that with my new router. The DVR function absolutely needs to be able to wake the computer and keep it awake though.

I vote for this, too. (Yes, I clicked Like.) IMO, this is a significant feature missing from Plex DVR (and which is in WMC).

yes i vote too

I am guessing this hasn’'t been implemented yet? This is a pretty big for those of us who don’t like leaving their computer on 24/7

So I found a work around on this…basically I have to set the recording in WMC as well and then go back and delete that recording.

Of course, that uses twice as many tuners and disk activity. I’ve also had (what I think are) issues with tuner contention between WMC and Plex, even when the DVR isn’t set up, but YMMV.

Instead, you can create your own scheduled task to wake the PC before Plex needs to record and to go back to sleep afterwards.

To speed up the process, you can export the tasks to XML files, edit those, and import them to create new tasks…or just edit the two tasks for new times, or write an app to do it given the start/end times. Of course, this is going to get tedious to set up for every recording. It’d be nice if there were some Plex API so an app could do all of this automatically.

Good idea but not very wife friendly. All she wants to do is is set a recording and not have to worry about it. It’s hard enough getting her to use the web app. The main app needs the recording feature too.

This is a must have feature for me as well. WMC and my old Mediaportal setups did this. A no brainer really.

+1 from me

There is an ā€œofficialā€ (five year-old) feature request for this. https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/48706/wol/p1
You can like the original post to vote for it.

Cheers

Yes, this is definitely needed.

The DVR function absolutely needs to be able to wake the computer and keep it awake though. I am disappointed that my WMC I just came from does it nicely and PLEX DOES NOT. It has to be added. Much of a day my plex server is sleeping only to as needed to wake up to record programs. Its not serving anyone else but me.! PLEASE ADD THIS.

I sort of got around this by running a scheduled task on the server to wake it around 4pm. I then used AMP WinOff to make it sleep at 1am. As most of my recordings are done between these times I catch most. I do run the server all day at the weekend but still make it sleep at 1am (use a different scheduled task). If you are trying this method, make sure you set the server to ā€˜never sleep’ and let Winoff do this task. Its not pretty and sometimes WinOff fails, but on the whole it does the job. There are probably better sleep programs out there - please post back of you find a good one.

There is another way as explained on this forum, but you need a router that can handle DD-WRT.

This is a must have feature with a DVR where you can schedule a recording! All I want is for the computer to wake up a minute before a recording starts. This needs to be on the short list for the next DVR features. Plex has done such an incredible job of making everything else so simple and seamless, that it makes this such a glaring miss.

I also created scheduled WIN 7 tasks to do the same. Sleep and wake the laptop around times I know I never record.

How in the world was this not a part of Plex from the beginning? I loved Plex Pass when I first bought it but as I use it more and find its quirks I’m starting to wonder if ditching my Windows Media Center set up was a good idea. Is information about upcoming scheduled recordings exposed in any way that would allow one to script their own wake up task?
