To bring the ease of use of Plex for OS X to the audiophile world, it is necessary that output bit depth and sampling rate switch automatically according to the music file played back. Right now, I must switch manually outside Plex in the OS X midi setup, and that is not exactly convenient. Therefore, I suggest the following is developed in a near future version:
[]By default, the system bit depth and sampling rate is used. (From the midi settings in OS X)
[]The audiophile option: a maximum bit depth and maximum sampling rate can be configured. Plex adapts the output bit rate and output sampling rate automatically according to the file played back, but never higher than the maximum configured.
Thanks for the suggestion, makes sense, and is similar to the refresh rate switching feature for video
I would suggest that this be an optional thing ... it really depends on your setup. For example with my setup I wouldn't want Plex to be able (or try to) change the bit depth and/or sampling rate as my setup is connected through a MOTU Core system and requires that the bit depth and sampling rate reflect what I'm using on the external hardware. Also it would be preferable to configure it to also have a minimum rate and bit depth. I wouldn't want Plex to try and change the system settings to match a mono 64k podcast ;)
What would you consider the advantages to having Plex switch your bit depth and sampling rates? Off the top of my head I can't think of any examples where this would be beneficial to be honest, but maybe I'm missing something obvious :)
