I have a little Feature addition in mind, which I want to explain to you guys.
Background Story:
Yesterday I had a little discussion with my wife about the movie “L. A. Confidential”.
Days ago we finished the current season of “House of Cards”. So I said to her “I know a great movie with Kevin Spacey → L. A. Confidential. The movie has even been nominated for the Academy Awards and also won some Oscars”.
Her answer was: “Won? Which categories? I don’t want to watch a movie with an award for Best Make-Up which other than that is having the worst plot ever.”
So that started it all. I opened up IMDB and looked up the winning categories. (btw: “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” for Kim Basinger and “Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published”)
My idea:
Maybe it is possible to add these information to the information screen of movies and TV shows so you do not have to leave the App/PMP/Webscreen. As far as I know Freebase provides these kinds of information. I did a fast mockup to show you what I mean.
As you can see on the mockup the movie has an Academy Award and Golden Globe sign on the upper right side to mark it as a nominated and/or winning movie. So you know just by opening the movie “Hey it was nominated and/or winner”. On the bottom of the page there is an ugly list of awards. I personally would prefer a kind of pop-up when you click an one of the awards on the upper right. So you could keep the overview as simple as possible.
You can also see that the name “Kim Basinger” has kind of a link-style. That means you have several movies with her in your DB and the link would lead to other movies with her and an award-overview for her.
I know it is all a bit edgy but with some Plex-fancyness you could make this a real feature.
There would be hundreds of possible benefits:
Filtering Award winners
Filtering special kind of Award winner (i. e. “Best Actor”)
Filter movies with most Awards and/or nominations
A much better feel for the actors (a list with nominations and wins when you click the actor’s name)
TV shows could also get all of the features → Golden Globes and Emmy awards
…
Thanks for your attention.
(If something like this has already been asked/answered → just delete it ^^)
Anything ever happen here? With a library of 1100 movies, I’ve gone through and created a Category Tag for “Awards”. But obviously its a huge pain in the butt to manage, and doesn’t allow for filtering winners vs nominees.
As mentioned above, I’d rather watch the nominees for Best Picture than the winner of Best Score. Would love to see something here.
If somebody wants to start a scraper… here is a start for the Oscar data:
http://awardsdatabase.oscars.org/Search/GetResults?query={“FieldFilters”:[{“Index”:1,“Field”:{“Id”:2,“DisplayName”:“Film Title”,“FieldName”:“name”,“SortViewFieldName”:“Film”,“SortViewSortCode”:“2”,“IsSortable”:true,“SortBy”:“All”},“SearchTerm”:“12 years a slave”,“SearchType”:1}],“Sort”:“2-Film Title-Alpha”,“Search”:“Advanced”}
Replace "12 years a slave"with the title of the film you are after… and scrape it from their web site…
On the other hand… this is Oscar Awards only… and it would be cooler to have it integrated it nicely.
That would be amazing. I’m actually doing not only the Academy Awards, but also the Golden Globes, BAFTA and a couple of others. Also, I’m making something similar for the Cannes, Berlin and Venise Festival + TIFF and Sundance. I’v also created collections with data from the American Film Institute, the Library of Congress and Sight & Sound and I usually create some with Year-End-List of various publications. As of now, I’ve been doing all the work manually. Collecting the data is already a pretty intense process, but also, the fact that the only feature I can use to add the data to PLEX is the collection field certainly doesn’t make the job easier. Actually, in my opinion, an extra page of tags awards and festival related could be added for these informations.
Would love this too, I’m going to add tags but I’m exhausted just thinking about doing it. Many replies but just 5 votes at the time of writing. Maybe the vote button was integrated later? To anyone tracking this who didn’t vote: come back and vote!
