Firstly, the praise. Plexamp is awesome. Thanks. My music library has been given a new lease of life.
Here’s a thing that I thought would be a nice touch…especially for all the patchy cell signal people out there.
Would you be able to put some sort of indicator of the level the cache is currently running?
Maybe something like a thin line below the album-art that just represents 0-100%
It could even be hidden when at 100% and appear when the buffer starts to deplete i.e when you enter a tunnel. That wouldn’t add clutter to the beautiful interface unnecessarily
Mockup below…running about 80% there.
The other thing that comes to mind is preventing songs from the same artist queueing one after another when listening to a radio station.
Thanks.
The track. It is very rare you’ll actually see it working though. Plexamp will cache the play queue aggressively (if you let it and the connection allows it).
Probably only directly after creating a new playback queue, while using a slow-ish network connection.
I could only simulate it for the screen shot by using a 96/24 Flac, because my wifi is too fast.
I assume you have found and adapted these preferences?
Settings - Music Quality
as well as
Settings - Advanced - Caching
If your mobile data reception tends to be rather poor, you want to reduce the quality setting for “cellular”.
well thank you so much, we really appreciate that!
it’s a great idea, and something we’ve discussed a bit. it’s slightly tricky because the caching layer is pretty separated from the UI layer, but it’s not impossible. we also weren’t sure how best to show it (e.g. badging individual items vs some sort of status indicator).
I personally tend towards showing something like “25 minutes cached” because that’s a real-world indicator
this is basically “i want random to actually not be random” we’ve done some work on “smart shuffling” on the server (e.g. pushing more recently listened tracks to the back), but we haven’t done any work with “improved” “interleaving” (improved in quotes because it’s sort of subjective). would be server-side work…
I do think it’d be both doing this just to make the shuffling smarter and to increase the variation. Also, maybe an option to link certain tracks as well so that they always play back to back (for tracks that fade into each other).
Hey @elan I really like the idea! I think it would be very practical to know how many minutes of cached music I have on my phone before let’s say a three hours flight…
