It would be nice, if there were a way to temporarily put up a custom banner message/image for my plex clients, when I need to do quick maintenance. I don’t like reaching out to them via email for such a small, trivial outage. But at the same time, if I were to close the plex app on the hosting server, any perceived downtime makes me as host look bad.
I wish I could quickly write, 'the server will be down for 8 minutes while I replace a hard drive" or whatever! (but obviously the server needs to be up in order to transmit the message, so it needs to be a banner that disables the GUI somehow?)
This has been discussed quite extensively as an option in the “send server messages” suggestion. Therefore some other previous versions of this suggestion have been integrated in that thread.
Wow, that thread will be a decade old this November. The Plex web app has a way to stop a stream and send a message to that user, but only when streaming content. Someone suggested a ‘Maintenance Mode’ where streaming is disabled and any client who tries to open the library will get a custom banner message. I think that is far more useful- a passive bulletin as opposed to an active, direct message.
But, clearly, no one who works at Plex cares about this forum. To leave ANY topic not answered for a decade, (let alone a great idea) shows how much they care about their client base.
Possibly because nobody here is providing a service to “clients”. This is a hobby for friends and family there really is no need to explain why something is down to friends and family as they should be well aware we are not Netflix nor provide a Netflix like “service”.
