also my nas firmware is 4.3.5.0760 , i saw a mention of fw 4.4? I have a update pending to : 4.3.6.0805 but not 4.4? do I need to become a beta?
4.3.6.0805 is needed and the NVIDIA_GPU_DRV pack that comes with it.
If you need help dealing with the NVIDIA_GPU_DRV package, let me know. Their uninstaller is broken.
You do not need 4.4 at this time.
The NVIDIA_GPU_DRV package is what I key on.
Be prepared as there are some Virtual Switch changes which come with 4.3.5.
It will look a little “Wonky” at first.
Thanks for the assist Chuck, Do I need to uninstall my current nvidia drv package , Current version on my device is: V1.2.181130 ?
thank you,
Steve
Steve, That’s the correct version.
When you upgrade QTS, if it flags it as available, install again.
Chuck…this is great news. I just bought a QNAP TS-1677X and was looking for news on GPU assisted HW transcoding for Plex. When do you think testing will be out of Beta? Would be great if QNAP could then add it to their official features page. I’d have preferred to stay with Synology but they aren’t wiling to spec out their hardware the same way QNAP is doing.
Storry,
We sneaked it into PMS 1.15.0. Until the transcoder team completes their work, it will only gain the GPU assist for encoding.
Having just confirmed with QNAP;
- If the nVidia card is on their compatibility list
- And the QNAP model has a PCI-E slot and power supply to support it.
- PMS will use it for encoding H.264 now.
I am 100% dependent on them presenting the card in QTS.
From there:
- Control Panel -> Graphics Card -> QTS mode
- Restart PMS.
What brand of P4000 do you have? I am having a hard to locating a Leadtek Quadro P4000, and was wondering if you installed a different brand than Leadtek.
Mine is from Nvidia. You can get them direct from Dell.
Just to make sure that I understand this thread. If I add a nVidia card to my QNAP TS-877 (Ryzen 1700) NAS when the transcoder team completes their work I will be able to use hardware transcoding? So this is no longer limited to just Intel based CPU?
Thank you. I just wanted to confirm other card would work other than those from Leadtek.
Can you currently install the NVIDIA_GPU_DRV package from App Center?
If you can,
1… Verify with QNAP that it works, but it should
2. Verify your card is on the compatibility list
3. Plex is ready if QNAP supports the card on your machine.
Remember:
- Card in QTS mode
- Initially you will get H.264 encode only.
- When their work is complete, we will have decode and encode.
I am very much looking forward to having this be updated for HW decoding AND encoding.
Currently have a P2000 and am waiting to pull the trigger on a new 872XT
Hello,
Is there a method that we can use to test this/ check if it’s working?
Thanks
Chris
- Control Panel - Graphics - Card in QTS mode
- PMS 1.15.0 and above
- Start playback
- Force transcoding to a lower bitrate
- Observe “Now Playing” status (take a bit to update)
If I have an nVidia 980 card, would it be worth putting in to a QNAP TVS-872XT-16GB to do GPU accelerated encoding, or is intel quicksync via the i5 better?
One thing you will get immediately with QSV is HW decoding.
The i5-8xxx ASIC produces seriously fine video quality.
PMS doesn’t distinguish between GPUs. This means that if you put in the nVidia, you lose the QSV.
Maybe a bit off-topic but I am planning to upgrade to a TVS1677x. Is a 1050Ti 4GB sufficient for HW decoding or shall I go for 1060 6GB? Thanks!
No HW decoding at this time here. We don’t, and unfortunately won’t, know until we have the capability in hand and can start profiling it.
Is the card on the QNAP compatibility list ?
Hi @ChuckPa, it’s been a while.
My TVS-463 has developed a backplane fault and after some exchanges with QNAP support, who recommended I replace the NAS as it was out of warranty, and the QNAP Shop here in Australia I’ve managed to bring myself to order a TS-877 to replace it.
It’ll be a little while before I can get a graphics card (and I’ve only ordered the NAS today) but when I do I’ll be able to help with testing. I use this NAS for work duties so a Plex install will have to be temporary, but certainly enough to test things out.

hey mate, I cannot update to the newest drivers , there is no update option ?
you meantioned the uninstaller is broken. thank you
