FEATURE REQUEST: Here is a list of things that would be great additions to Plex

I use Plex to manage my collection of Videos on my hard drive. Plex does a pretty great job however here is a list of things that would make Plex even greater:

  1. When using the Library feature it would be very nice for Plex to display on that line of text all the directories particularly the ACTOR so I can quickly go back there to find another sub category under that “root”. I file my movies by the main ACTOR(s) in the movie. The back button is slow and frustrating. Going to the MAIN category takes me out of that specific category.
  2. Be able to display more than one pic from the movie. How about a loop of multiple images selected.
  3. Allow me to put the same movie into more than one main category and have it retain the tags and metadata that I entered for the same movie from another category. For example suppose I have a category called Adventure Movies, but I also want to list that same movie under the category of the Actor(s). The movie also fits under my Action Movie category and War Movies. If I put that movie under each of those categories I have to re-enter all that data each time.
  4. When I am looking for a movie to view I often want to see what other Categories/Movies I have entered sub category for. Example, I am in War movies, There is a sub category for one of the actors, I want to see what other movies I have with that actor. Right now Plex normally only lists the movies from that first TAG. Show more of those tag movies in my collection not just the first one. I notice that some of my movie tags do list a number of those tags but few display more than the first Tag.
  5. Allow me to control what displays when you load the main page. I have some porn movies that I don’t want to display on the front main page. One of the prior Plex uploads sort of does that but when I add a new category Plex is putting the NEW category on the front page where I don’t want them.
  6. I have a large collection of movies with many categories. That Collections menu displays rather slowly due to all the thumbnails. How about letting us control the size of the thumbnails or allow me to turn off the thumbnails and display a list of the category title which I can click on amd get to that sub category then see the thumbnail(s) for that movie.
  7. How about Plex being able to used as a web tool that I can set up to access movie services I subscribe to, saving me from having to shut down Plex and use a browser to get there.
  8. Plex has a habit of combining certain types/categories of movies into ONE “info” link. Looks like it does that when the names contain a similar text string. That might work except when I hit play Plex only plays the FIRST movie. I need to be able to edit the list of movies linked to that item. Really I see little value in putting more than one movie into any page. Plex also does not want to allow me to list these movies separately to redo how it displays and links. Let me turn off adding more than ONE movie to a Movie display.
  9. I get a number of errors when Plex looks at the online data bases. I have had it put metadata on to a movie page that has NOTHING to do with that movie. I am doing a better job of being specific in naming the movie. It is difficult to edit that metadata.
  10. The Recommended list of movies repeatedly displays many of the same movies multiple times even though there is only ONE copy of the movie in the folder., that movie could be displayed five + times. Why does it do that?
  11. Allow me to list SUB categories that are not MAIN or TOP level. For example, I have a category called ACTION MOVIES. Under that I want to list WAR MOVIES. Under that I want VIETNAM War MOVIES then be able to have a YEAR the movie was made, Etc. I don’t want Year 2000 Vietnam War Movies to be on the primary display. I want Action movies on the top, open to get to Vietnam War then see the list of years or whatever below that.
  12. Let me edit that Movie list on the left side and move the listings. It would be wonderful to have that left listing allow me to display SUB categories by clicking the main listing by clicking a main category.
  13. I’d like some kind of note/marker that indicates I have already placed that move file into Plex. Right now the only way to know that is open that Movie in Plex and look. All my movies are in Individual folder directories. One trick I learned is putting the year of production. The default 1900 doesn’t display. Change it and that displays on the Library list. But the displays on the Library list only on the movie file. Without opening the dir I can’t see if I have set up and linked that movie to Plex. I have a LOT of movies so this is a problem and Time Consuming,
Part two of this is if I have a movie in more than one category like Action Movies and ACTOR name I have NO way of knowing I did that without looking in Plex. I have a workaround by having a TXT file I place in the subdir but I had to create TXT file for each category that specific movie is in Plex. That is a hassle Must be a better method.
  14. Not sure how to fix this. Let’s say I have a movie with four main actors. On my hard drive I have the movie file in ONE actor sub folder. I put shortcuts of the movie to the other three actors sub folder for that movie. Plex does not recognize shortcuts. Suppose I am adding movies to my Plex data base. I open the Library listing in Plex. There is an actor’s name. I open the sub folder list. There is a movie that I want in Plex. I open that folder and there is NO movie. The actual movie file is in another Actor’s folder. Be nice if Plex gave me an option of following a short cut. This is not my TOP request just something to ponder.

It seems like all of these requests are super specific fringe cases. Some of the features do exist already; when on a movie page you can click on an actor and see other films they are in. You can also manually add more genres to films so they appear on more categories.

All that to say, don’t get your hopes up on any of this being implemented.

You can already do all of this with Collections

Right, but I have to re-enter the meta data each time I put that movie into another category. I’m talking top level categories. Of course you can link a movie to multiple sub categories under a main category. If I have the categories Action Movies and War Movies on the left menu and I want that one movie in both the meta data does not carry over. You know when you set up a main category on the left menu you have to list the directories you want it to scan for movies. The meta data does not carry over.

So when you use the word Category, what you actually mean is Library. If that’s the case, then I suggest you’re doing it wrong.

But if you are set on using a separate library for each type/category of film then I’ll be stepping away from this thread

As one of thousands of Plex subscribers that at a previous time had a huge menu of Genre Libraries. It became a bloat of Library entries that many of my users did not use.

I would suggest moving to creating custom Collections and or using the Genre Filters.

I do admit the Filters may not cover all Genre or Sub Genre that you would like, but your example of War and Action are present.
