[Feature Request]: Ability To Create Subcategories/Genres In Each Folder

I would love if it were possible to create genres or subcategories for each folder in your PMS.

For example, most people seem to have Movies, TV Shows, etc in their list - I would very much like to be able to click on, say 'Movies,' and within, have separated genre categories (of my choosing,) so that I could not have to go through every movie in my list.

I understand that there is an option for playlists, which would do something similar to what I'm asking, but I'd actually like to do it on my computer/server end - so that Plex sees my movie folder, and within my movie folder, I have Action, Comedy, Horror, etc etc, and within those folders are the actual movies.  I have tried to do this already, but Plex automatically takes the name of the folder and turns it into a movie title ('Horror' becomes the 80s film of the same name, 'Comedy' becomes a Jerry Seinfeld stand-up special, etc)

So basically, on the server/computer end, the folders would be set like this:

and in the PMS, I'd get a movies folder, with each sub-categories or genre listed in it. Then each movie would be in its respective genre's folder.

Same could be done for TV series, etc.

Why not just use the built-in filters?

I'm not a fan of how Plex separates them - action, adventure, adventure comedy, action thriller...? It's just way too many categories. I'd have to individually go back and change the genre in each and every title, which would be a huge hassle, if I wanted to coherently use those categories. It would be easier to categorize the films myself into folders.

Perhaps it's just my OCD kicking in about folders on the computer/server end.

Maybe this feature request suits your needs already?

It is better not to spread the votes....

A good idea, but not exactly what I'm thinking.

Obviously this is something that only I am interested in, so I will figure a way to get it to work to my specifications.

Nothing is official--and no timeframe--but I think they'll be adding better functionality for mass editing metadata. That would make this option much less painful. Probably easier than actually moving movies into genre folders.

I have found over the years that it is best not to have too many folder levels in your LIbrary.

While some media software support this others do not.

For Movies I have a separate folder for One off Movies and another for Collections.

Collection

-Movie Series

--Movie 1

---Movie 1 Extras

--Movie 2

Movies

-Movie 1

When a sequel comes out I move the files from movies into the collection folder so even in cases (Like Plex) where they don't group collections I can use folder view to find them easier.

But for genres I find using the Tags the best method. Adding Genre folders seems like overkill and won't work with some programs that will only drill down two layers deep.

Not to mention that many movies fit into several genres. Try to fashion that into a folder structure... ;-)
