No worries. I should write a bit of a warning about ssh though. Its a powerful tool used to configure servers. As such should be treated with a healthy amount of caution and respect. If you are going to open it up to the internet, do your research: KexAlgorithms Cyphers MACs HostKeyAlgorithms various hardening guides (and cross reference them), restricting it to certain users and ip addresses, disabling old options there for compatibility, running a firewall etc. You dont have to be a crypto god, just have a reasonable understanding whats strongest and the implications of quantum supremacy/shors algorithm.
Might want to spin up a vps/docker container to test out the configuration before you apply it to your server so you don’t accidentally lock yourself out of it. (Guilty! Typo…)
As for symbolic links the main advantage is when you move the library files just target it at the new location plex wont know anything has changed no headaches. The new scanner is pretty good though seems to remember everything previously matched.
I could write a debian shell script to spin everything up harden it, install plex and all the fun stuff. Post it on the forums, that’s a serious time investment though.Instead I recommend whatbox they have managed beasts of servers. Their running hardened gentoo and hardening what they compile. Which says a lot. They know vastly more than i do. Got nothing but praise for them. (mods: if im not allowed to recommend sorry, just nuke it)
Also remember to go to plex, then the spanner for options then go to library then untick the box Empty trash automatically after every scan
Mildly annoying that you have to go to the tower of three dots beside your library, then Manage Librarythen Empty Trash On the rare event that you delete a file. But it saves your customization from being lost in the case of an update knocking out your simlink/ssfs
haven’t found a good non root sshfs that will play nice with the reconnect, reboot, timeouts and large file transfers.
when looking at guides for sshfs they all recommend the argument allowother don’t do that especially on a shared server it will give all other users access to your files.
