Feature Request: Increase or Decrease Playback Speed

One more note. I’ve read that this feature isn’t possible due to transcoding impossibilities. That seems odd to me if that’s the reasoning. I know Airvideo can do this. I know some might say, then go use AirVideo but, in every other respect, Plex is the superior product with its layout and automatic metadata tagging.

Echo… echo… echo…

I want the variable speed on my TiVo! I can speed up shows on my TiVo now, just wish they’d add it to that version.

+1. It would be incorrect to say that it’s impossible because of transcoding. It might be correct to say that changing speed on the fly would be difficult due to transcoding. This doesn’t mean the option couldn’t be added and manipulated during pauses of the video/audio stream or before playback begins at all. It might be inconvenient in some ways, but it would be a fantastic feature addition.

+1 i would find it especially beneficial for training/educational videos

add me to this cue, togling through with fast forward can be painful to skip part close together

How is this not a feature yet?!

Obviously everyone wants it.

What can I do to help develop this feature? (I’m a quality engineer so I’d be able to test the feature & improve it’s quality, but not code the thing)

Like many others I too require this feature for…

  • Getting caught up on all the news I DVR daily.
  • Getting caught upon all the sports teams/events I follow daily.

…the ability to have a 1.5 playback speed for all my news & sports saves me a ton of time.

HOWEVER, I currently have to resort to old installations of Windows 7 with build it Windows Media Center in order to watch & listen to the News and Sports I record. And when I’m on the go I have to resort to a wonderful little program called “Air Video HD” for iOS devices which has variable speed playback if you pay the extra for the added plugin to do so. …but having 3 different Media Management Softwares between all of my devices to accomplish this is just a pain.

Therefore, PLEASE tell us all how we can help get this feature on the roadmap and implemented sooner than later.

THANKS!

2 years later but this still needs to happen. I feel like I’m wasting so much time watching videos normal speed.

I am in. Would also like this. Please devs.

My library is getting out of hand. So much to watch, not enough time. My friend watches his stuff on youtube and using VLC and he watches at 1.5x speed. He can blow through some of the more boring parts. Would be great to have this integrated into plex.

Video Speed Controller plugin for Chrome makes this possible on web clients – which PROVES that it can 100% be accomplished. What I’d like to see is support for speed adjustment on my mobile client. The Plex App for iOS suffers without this feature, and I use it often for lectures on the go.

Given the support for this, wouldn’t it be at least reasonable to placate the user base with an attaboy and, “We’ve added the feature request. We’ll get to it in X months?” The delightful lack of commentary by developers is a little disconcerting.

Thinking about this again, when Plex is Trans coding and speed control using WiFi. Hmm this sounds like a feature that could cause lots of drop out 3 Dots etc

Plex should look into a feedback mechanism that allows users to up vote requested features directly…and be notified on progress and caveats around what is happening or why it won’t. My UX Team and I are looking into a vendor that does this right now.

Also…I desperately want this feature…its absence almost makes me want to go insert my DVDs into the unused player…almost.

Can we please at least get variable speed playback for mp3 files? I have a lot of spoken work audio files, and I prefer to listen faster than 1x… Also eliminating audio white space would be a great bonus. Pocket Casts for instance does this nicely.

This isn’t exactly what’s being asked for, but I thought maybe it could be useful to someone reading this thread. There is a plugin called Video Speed Controller for the Chrome browser that allows you to control the speed of any HTML5 video (including Plex streams) with keyboard shortcuts. There are equivalents for FireFox as well. I just tried casting to my Chromecast. It works, but not very well.

Looks like Kodi just added support for this.

I know the codebases are completely different now, but hopefully their implementation can provide some inspiration.

Please. I love my audiobooks, but prefer to listen at 1.4-1.5x speed.

Yes please!

Speed up playback watching video (include 1.1x to 1.5x ffwd rate with audio)?

Here’s hoping it puts pressure on Plex to make this happen! I got a lifetime pass for the hope this would one day be added! My Tivo has the ability to speed up video even!

I did not realize TiVo had this feature.

+1 This is the only thing I miss from VLC. Please add this to Plex!
