An option to use local authentication (i.e. LDAP or local users) would be ideal for those wanting to provide remote access to friends/family without providing remote access to plex admins (this is disclosed in the myplex description). Some folks simply want more control over remote access without granting ultimate access to unknown people.
A separate landing page for LDAP user login would be cool.
Leveraging existing systems that provide user authentication would reduce needed code overhead.
LDAP is far from a simple installation and configuration and varies greatly by platform. I do not know that I would agree with it being easy use or administer.

Kinda disagree here, and think the OP's req. is great.
Lots of free solutions are already in place out there, based on python and SQLite, like https://masterbranch.com/web2py-project/461818
But when above is said, it kinda seems like Plex decided to got with their server based solution, allowing every Plex user to be able to share with each other, and to bypass local auth :(

i thought the "parental controls" is the thread, that means "local user authentication" ?!? or am i wrong? well, before, i thought the "multi-user support" thread was this too....

Nope...you are not wrong.....the dear child has many names, however....this one goes beyound that, and mentions LDAP, as well, meaning support for something like AD and eDirectory, allowing Plex to grap huge user databases in one go

But LDAP databases tend to be fairly proprietary in terms of logins. They are great at inquiries once logged in.
My concern here is that the real goal is AD support instead of platform-independent authorization. How that would work alongside the MyPlex model is a bit nebulous.

Huh?...Use it all the time with great success

Agreed, and that's why LDAP is cool....you have LDAP servers on almost everything, and can even support groups, so like only members of cn=mygroup can logon, and then futher down to that only members of cn=mygroup2 can see the xxx- section etc.
How that would work alongside the MyPlex model is a bit nebulous.
You could if implimemted, use local as first resource, and if user is not found there, then go to myPlex

Agreed, how do we vote for this feature?

IT Administrator here. LDAP is not proprietary. There are plenty of open source solutions... hell even the QNAP NAS can be turned into an LDAP server.
The real goal is AD support? Seriously? I don't think so. If you want Active Directory support then everyone wanting to use it would need a domain controller planted in their homes. LDAP literally stands for lightweight directory access protocol.
Although you can do LDAP with AD (LDAP queries against AD database), AD is overkill. We just need LDAP services built into plex so users can login against the LDAP database.
Can I resurrect this request? I'd be thrilled with basically any secure local authentication options, but LDAP support would be amazeballs.
agreed, any local authentication would be great, I would personally be willing to pay for a "standalone PMS" or something to that effect to get away from relying on a 3rd party service
more things in life need LDAP. consider this request "liked".
I think the current outage is a perfect example of why we need this, plex is a local service, all my media is on MY servers, my authentication should be too.. I don't like plex holding the keys to my kingdom and being at their mercy... if there was a better solution I would have already left but plex is an excellent application, just with a terrible "cloud" mentallity
+1.
I was not happy when I realized that Plex was designed as a SaaS Service that would not work without Big Brother letting me access data outside the local network.
If anyone has attempted to access their Plex Servers directly via a WAN connection October 20th, Plex website is offline, and there is no way that anyone can access any Plex server that requires Authentication. This would result in any customer accessing Plex outside the local network will automatically fail. Whats worse is that Plex looks like the application is offline.
What happened today shows why feature like this one would be great.
Came to a nice and quiet night shift at work, fired up Plex app and nothing happened.
I managed to get it working via VPN but doubt many people have home VPN set up.
Local authentication (all handled within plex) would be great. This would allow me to give my family access to my plex server via HTTP://IPADDRESS:PORT/WEB in the event that the main website (plex.tv) is down.
Current Architecture would have Plex outlined as a SaaS software since central goes down, the Entire Customer base experiences an outage.
No true at all. All of my local clients worked fine.
No true at all. All of my local clients worked fine.
Kinda depends on the setup of the local clients, IMHO
Like:
If your needs are to perhaps restrict kids in the house to access certain parts of Plex, then auth. for the local clients only option, is to go via plex.tv, or?
/T
True, but to say
the Entire Customer base experiences an outage.
Is not true, plenty of us could still enjoy Plex.
Oh, and my way around this:
If your needs are to perhaps restrict kids in the house to access certain parts of Plex
is to not put anything on Plex I don't want my kids to watch.
