[Feature Request] Multi-Episode Files

I understand the current mechanism in place for multi-episode files. That works, and is good sometimes. However, there are cases where it isn’t enough.

For example, cartoons like Dexter’s Laboratory. There are 13 “episodes” in season 1’s disc set. However, TVDB counts the season as having 39 episodes. And the episodes are not always in order (like, e01 could end up breaking into e01, e04 and e05, or some shows, if weird enough, have an episode that breaks into multiple episodes across seasons!). It would be really nice to be able to either have an accompanying metadata file or dialog in the server for that file that says “this file breaks into the following sXXeYY during these frame/time ranges”. It would be a lot of extra work for the library owner to piece that information together, but totally worth it to get the result.

Have you tried setting your show in PMS to use the DVD order?

Unfortunately, DVD ordering won’t work for Dexter’s Laboratory. They list 3 episodes under one episode number. https://www.thetvdb.com/series/dexters-laboratory/seasons/dvd/1

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn’t know about that feature, but sad to see that it wouldn’t work anyway :frowning:

Huh. That is the first time I’ve seen them list multiple things under the same episode. Weird.

It happens a lot with the shows from that time. Two Stupid Dogs with Super Secret Secret Squirrel, Dexter’s Laboratory with The Puppet Pals. And then most cartoons from then had 2 episodes on the same half hour, broken up into 11 minute chunks. Syndication and the DVD delivered them in a single episode, but they are technically separate episodes, sometimes from different TVDB seasons. Pretty irritating lol.

I’d like to see the ability to mark where each episode is within the episode file.

It is common to have some shows where the episodes are bundled: S01E0102 for example.

When watching with plex, you end up watching the entire file twice, sometimes three times depending on how many episodes are within that file.

I usually end up splitting files myself, but it would be great if it was just part of metadata (considering we now have the ability to skip intros, this shouldn’t be too hard)
