Feature Request: Multiple content types in one Library.

It would be awesome if video clips were available to be viewed in the Photos Library.

My example:

I use adobe lightroom to import and rename photos and videos from my dslr into the directory that I have my Photos Library pointed to.

Lets say I go to the fair and take a combination of photos and videos. I come home and import the files to my desired folder on my NAS. This folder happens to be in the directory that my Photos library is pointed to. So now if I go to my Photos library, i see that all of my pictures from the fair are showing up and are organized. Beautiful, almost. Everything is great except none of the video clips I shot at the fair are showing up.

Now, I can point my Home Movies library to the same directory as my photos and that works sort of. In my case this leaves me with a mess of videos in Home Movies library. I can browse by folder which helps somewhat but then ALL folders in that directory show up whether they actually contain video clips or not.

I think it is important that we keep in mind the difference between an actual "Home Movie" and random video clips. In my mind the Home Movie Library is where i would want actual home movies consisting of various clips edited together. So keep the clips in the same place as your photos so you can see everything that happened "at the fair" and keep your actual Home Movies organized in a different location that the Home Movies library is pointed to.

You can create multiple 'Home Video' section instances,  naming them anything you want as well as pointing them to different directories.    A common use of this is in creating two 'Movie' sections, but naming one "Kids Movies" and pointing it to a directory containing movies appropriate for the age group.     Does this give you the level of separation you need?

Not really. I would be ok with using "Home Movies" to view my video clips but the organization is not good at all. This may have to do with how i have my photo directory structure set up idk but my "Photos" library works perfectly. As i said, sorting by folder in home movies somewhat works but this shows folders that do not contain video. If it would only show the folders that contained video i think that could possibly be a compromise if having multiple content types in one library is not an option for the future.

The goal here is to use plex for a quick way to view photos/video clips with the family after coming home from an event. A quick import and a few minute wait and all of the pictures are in plex and ready for viewing on the TV with chromecast. The only downside is having to "dig up" video clips somewhere else. I might be the only one with this use case idk..

I am too thinking that creating an event the way you describe it, would be great.

Ask for a feature request for a new category call "events". In events users will be able to add both pictures and videos into one library. I can't imagine it being too hard to accomplish. It would also be great if they allow creating multiple separate events within one EVENT library. Allow the user to select a picture as cover art. Similar to iPhoto.

Sounds like a really cool idea.

Ok. Now I understand. Thanks for explaining.

Thanks breezytm. You got it before I could say it

I think of an ‘event’ as a ‘super class’ of the other category types already defined

YES! The event name could just pull from the names of folders in the directory that you have the library pointed to. I would think most people already have their directory structure named like that anyway. Thanksgiving 2014, Christmas 2014, etc..

Or you could take it as far as creating a "Custom Library" That you could name whatever you want and setup how you want it. Example could be a Kids library that contains only the media you want your kids to see but can contain multiple types (music, photos, videos)

Given the current structure, where the agents/channels are already an integral part, I would think trying to create a  'sub Library'  or 'Custom Library' might be asking too much.   I'm trying to think of what the team has to do as well.  That's why I think a 'super category' (still within the confines of the 'Library') with items from existing categories referenced in  could be the easiest to implement. From the user perspective, creating multiple 'event' types at the top level would be up to the user entirely as well as the individual events themselves within.   Later, after Plex gets established and starts moving toward version 1.x, it might dovetail into the long term goals better.

I’ve wanted this forever. I’m sick of having two libraries pointing at the same directory for showing related media elements (photos and videos) only because the file types are basically different.

Please!!!
