Having a rather large music collection, at would be really nice to be able to mark collection on album level. As an album should be possible to mark for several collections, the collection tagging should be one dimensional - like existing features on music artist level.
We are 6 users, each having own preferences and moods. This feature would allow for several different collections - and often artist level is just to ‘simple’
I just noticed this, and would have entered this request, had I not found this one.
I can see the use for creating a collection based on Artists (all Beatles albums, plus all solo albums by the Beatles members, for example). But I would think that is far less useful than creating collections based on albums.
Isn’t this already possible? Granted it works as a filter (inadequate IMO) not as a real collection display…Same issue Movies has where this is much more applicable
Go to Music and Artist view - Edit an Artist - go to Tags and Enter a Collection (“Beatles” for the beatles, Lennon, MCartney, Harrison and Starr, on First entry use the Add function to create the collection)
Then select view (Artist or Album) use new filter - Collections and select a collection (text only unfortunately which is what Movies do) everything in that collection will be displayed and you can see All Artists or all albums in that collection.

The request is for the ability to add a Collection tag to albums, not artists. It may be that a user doesn’t want all Beatles albums in the collection they’re building.
Yes! I went looking for how to do it and ended up here to indicate my vote for this feature. I want to be able to tag albums or equivalently put them in collections so that when I am in the mood for X I can easily say shuffle and play from collection X or albums tagged as X.
I have three different types of CDs in my “CD” Music Library. Some are mine, some are my wife’s, and the rest are free CDs Microsoft gave away a couple years ago. I would like to put them into three different “Collections” and have an easy way for me to see mine, my wife to see hers, and us to see the free CDs. Is there any way to do this that makes sense?
+1 this is severely needed. I’m trying to separate my regular music from film soundtracks and the like, and I’d rather not have to meddle with genre tags for the albums as it is.
Pls, make it real!!..I am frecuently separate pop music to rock music and these for decades only to enjoy my music for the 2000’s…maybe frecuently in this moment
This could also be a feature to improve on the “Various Artist” issue. Currently the artist tag is widely ignored except in the plex search when displaying tracks. Plex uses album artist most of the time. However if you have a lot of songs in your library by one artist let’s say Prince, good luck finding songs of the same artist in hundreds of samplers. The search result for tracks is limited to … is it 30 items? By adding each album, sampler respectively to a collection named “Prince” where this artist has contributed to one could neatly list everything relevant to that artist. I am pretty confident that in a proper tagging tool the process of populating the collection tag accordingly could be automated.
Thanks for the tip. Yes, you can now filter for the collection tag on album level which is nice but it is not used in the global search. I also found that my above proposal for handling various artists albums with collections leads to thousands of collection (one per artist) which makes the gui completely unusable.
Add my name to the list of having a collections filter for music like it’s available to videos and movies, I especially want it for a particular type of boxset, it’s one thing to have a boxset for an artist that has a number of discs that you can designate a discnumber to, especially a greatest hits collection, but it’s another matter when it’s a boxset of albums from a particular artist or multiple artists as listed below,
Various Artists - Atlantic Soul Legends (20 CD Boxset) (2012) - Where each disc is an album from a particular artist, I’ve had to separate it from just a standard “Various Artist” compilation, because it flatly doesn’t work or belong there
Another example of a boxset from a single artist but it has each album as an individual disc
John Cougar Mellancamp - 1978-2012 (19 Disc Box Set) (2013)
I want to see each of the albums with covers and info in this compilation, not just disc 1, disc 2, etc…
I would love to be able to designate these types of collections as album boxsets to differentiate them from the standard multiple disc set. which are just general boxsets like listed below
Now I know Plex is very slow at providing support or changing anything but this would make the Music Section of it’s database more robust and that will attract more users to their product. I mean how complicated can this be, to add a filter, since you have it already working in to other types of libraries.
Having a field where we could add names to Disc 1, Disc 2, etc…would be nice as you see I have to put it in the notes field, instead of where it truly belongs…but one thing at a time.
