[Feature Request] Option to disable auto-generated thumbnails (sports spoilers)

Curious - has anyone actually created a real feature request for this?

Rasplex and OpenPHT have a preferences option to disable episode thumbnails for unwatched in the default skin with the release of 1.6.2 following requests from users.

We listen to our users!

Regards

Shame I cannot use open openPHT on roku! Or chrome

+1 for this. It ruins any kind of sport I want to watch through Plex, I keep seeing the MotoGP or F1 results before I actually get a chance to press play.

Really was hoping this would have had some attention by now, am sure it would be easy to implement? Plex could just grab a screenshot from the beginning of the video rather than the end which would resolve this. (MotoGP ruined again for me on the weekend!)

Plex devs don’t watch sports, just cartoons.

[note: everyone who is watching this thread and/or made a +1 post should “like” the first post in the thread to help it get attention]

+1 to this. I didn’t realize this is actually a problem in Plex until today… total sports spoiler. Been Plex Pass subscriber for well over a year… Better listen to your subscribers or I am gone.

Surely with the introduction of Plex DVR this will be addressed now? Who wants to use Plex to record their programs to see the results/spoilers before they even watch the recording!

How ignorant are the Plex Developers? There is absolutely no logic reason to automatically make a thumbnail of the last past of the video. The only is thing you achieve is that this ruins a sports game or TV-series for a lot of users. Come on… these complaints have been around for years. Nobody wants these thumbnails. How can you take yourself seriously if you hang on to this weird feature. This is just ridiculous.

This problem sent me to Emby… Where I am enjoying no thumbnails for sports. Silly reason to leave really… But I did

I came from Emby, but I am am fully fledged Plex now for over a year but this “Issue” Oversight" “Ignored Problem” whatever you wish to call it has made me install Emby again on a VM, testing for now… maybe it will replace Plex soon… All these years and not even acknowledgement of the issue!

I’ve been hoping and wishing for a remedy to this really irritating problem in Plex for years. I even joined Plex Pass to support the developers and maybe see if it offered the functionality to eliminate the event-spoiling thumbnails - NOPE. Now I am actively looking for an alternative solution. A shame because Plex is a great platform but ruined by this “feature” of grabbing thumbnails near the end of the file. Can’t there simply be a toggle to choose if an when a thumbnail is grabbed? Doesn’t this also spoil movies and TV shows ?!?!

I would like to point on my agent for (currently) movies: http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/241713/rel-static-media-assets-agent

It is so good to hear that there is at last some movement in this issue where Plex has ruined WAY to many sports results for me! Thank You!!

Yet again, a 2 hour sports event TOTALLY ruined because the thumbnail gives away the result.

How we get this through to the developers that this really is a “BIG DEAL” to sports fans.

Cheers.

Especially as Plex PVR is the next big thing!

Thankfully not! just videos that are in a home video library as there is no metadata to scrape

I haven’t looked directly at the code that generates the thumbnail, but I can tell you without looking that there is such code. And given that, I can also say that it should be absolutely trivial - I’d be shocked if it took an hour of work - to create a toggle preference at the library level that just bypassed the code that generates the thumbnail. Bonus points for instead substituting some generic icon and even more bonus points for letting the user upload a .png for the generic icon on a library by library basis.

The problem, as @EddieA said above, is to get a plex dev to grok how HUGE AN ISSUE THIS IS for people who use Plex to watch sports. Do you guys understand that a thumbnail from near the end of a sporting event:

COMPLETELY

RUINS

IT?

Another option is to create your own thumbnails. This is a pain but it will save you from seeing the results onscreen.
ffmpeg -i file.avi -r 1 -vframes 1 -ss 00:05:00 file.jpg

This works on Linux if you have ffmpeg installed. A simple option to not create thumbnails for a library would be good.

This method works perfectly! I have it installed on two servers and all is well and no sports ruined!
