A lot of DVR-type players have a feature that, like Plex, shows you image previews of the video you're watching while fast forwarding or rewinding. Some of those have a very handy feature in which pressing Play during Rewind of Fast Forward begins playback a few seconds before (in FF, or after in Rewind) the point at which Play was pressed. This eliminates human reaction time from causing the, "Oops, went too far," moments that I'm sure many of us face with some regularity.
I brought this up on Reddit to try to gauge if I was alone in wanting this, and got a helpful response from someone who expressed what I want better than I have:
But when you hit resume / play, it would be totally reasonable to have it rewind an amount equal to human reaction time multiplied by the current rate [of rewind/fast forward].
I think this is probably more useful for fast forwarding for rewinding, personally, and since the preview always seems to work better with fast forward, it might be a much more effective feature if it only affected the playback time when resuming play from fast forward, but that all might be speculative.
I originally posted this thread in the PHT Plex Plass forum. This seems a more appropriate place.
