[FEATURE REQUEST] Setting to generate thumbnails "Only when media is added"

In a future release can you please add the ability, in Settings…Library… to be able to set these two settings to “Only when media is added”:

  • Generate video preview thumbnails 

  • Generate chapter thumbnails

Both just have three options:

  • Never

  • As a scheduled task

  • As a scheduled task and when media is added

It would be much appreciated if there was a fourth option:

  • Only when media is added

That way PLEX would still generate thumbnails when media is added without the overhead of running the scheduled task.

So you’re saying you only want the thumbs for newly added stuff and never for stuff already on the server?

Exactly!

I don’t need the overhead of the scheduled tasks running to cycle through all my media just to realize that everything already has thumbnails. If I ever need to run it again as a scheduled task I can always just turn it back on. It would be great to be able just just have the ability to generate thumbnails only when media is added.

OK I understand. However the overhead should be negligible. It takes my server less than two minutes to scan 110TB and decide it doesn’t need to do anything because nothing has changed.

it takes much longer on a Synology NAS to scan much less than half that. Pretty much every time I check my PLEX GUI and the Activity, it is “generating thumbnails”, and I see media it says it is generating thumbnails for items that I know already have thumbnails.

Ah yeah of course that makes sense.
I’m all for good options that make sense regardless of if it’s relevant to my set up.
Will try to free up one of my votes.
