Feature to have Plex ask where to store metadata right away

Hi there,

sorry to have the first thing here be a complaint, I generally love Plex and the possibilities it gives my to have my personal film library at hand all the time. But I’ve now lived through the growing pains of having lost all my metadata and feel this could be preventable quite easily on the side of the Plex software.

Last night, my system hard drive bricked. I had to setup my windows from scratch to be able to work the next day (my work machine is also a plex server for now). All of my Plex metadata got lost in this defect and i wanted to ask whether it is possible for the future updates to have Plex ask where you want to store the metadata of your libraries right during setup. I had highly customized my library to be my very personal Netflix with selfmade posters (I work in graphics) and had just gotten acquainted with Plex when the defect of my system drive happened and the data vanished with it. I had kind of assumed it was stored somewhere on the drive where my films are, that I regularly back up, but due to the defect now had to realize that it was stored on the system drive, a destination where from my POV it is much more vulnerable to data loss . Having Plex ask me where to put it right away, would’ve spared me the actual pain of now having to restore my library by hand. It’s really frustrating to know that one or two simple functions during setup, that - from my layman’s POV - seem very easy to implement, could have prevented it. This really killed my day. Sorry about the whining.

Regards,
Matthias

I would also recommend a bare metal recovery backup solution. I use https://www.veeam.com/ with nightly incremental backups. Weekly full backups and about 45 day retention on my backups. This allows both single file level recovery and complete PC crash recovery options.
