Any idea if FFMPEG .6 will be included in Plex 9? It has a pretty nice changelog. Link
Maybe at some point in Plex 9 but definitely not in the first several releases
Nice changelog indeed. Knowing what a complete pain it was when trying to switch over to the last big release I do not think we should hold our breathes. It’s a huuuge undertaking.
Yeah, you're right. Let's get 9 out the door before we start ripping and rebuilding it again.
Plex/9, probably never, given the reliance on a number of legacy functions which are now obseleted in ffmpeg. New Core Video player? Already done :).
I know it’s unlikely, but it would be great to update to .6. Blu ray subtitle support!!!
Please Doctor, do tell. New Core Video player? You have my sparked my interest. We did read about this in your blog although it seemed to work hand-in-hand with FFmpeg. I understand this will assist with sync issues and choppy video playback although how would we expect to increase the different types of media we support without migrating to the new version of FFmpeg eventually?
My thoughts exactly. Along with that, VC-1 support is part of the Google SOC for FFmpeg and I am hoping for the added support there as well with a future .6.x release.
I honestly thought this was a work in progress and would still be a while off yet. Any chance of a blog post going into a little detail about it and maybe outlining some of the bigger changes between the core video player and the current plex implementation?
That's great news. Hopefully we'll see interlaced VC-1 support by year end. I bought the Doctor Who specials bluray release the day it came out, and I haven't been able to get it into my Plex library because of that.
Hi Ryan,
If you have some time, can you explain how Plex uses ffmpeg? Since it seems to be a major undertaking, isn't there a way to take advantage of, say, newer libraries to support more media playback? I understand that new features like Blu-Ray subtitle support don't come by themselves, but if a newer ffmpeg version supports more/different video/audio codecs, isn't there a way to harness that support more easily?
Again, I understand that it's more complicated when there are framework changes like there apparently have been with this new .6 release, but it would be nice to drop in an updated library to get bugfixes or new codec support.
Thanks,
-Christian
It uses it like any other front-end, as a static/dynamic library. The current player uses an obselete ffmpeg API, so isn't easily upgradeable. I don't think there's much value in moving the deck chairs on the Titanic, as it were.
The new player is already using trunk ffmpeg.
Are you saying we are using the newest ffmpeg although we will not have all of the features due to the deprecated API?
Since moving the chairs is not feasible, what is your plan of action, General?
