Fire TV woes

Elan is aware of the issue (see the bottom of his blog post), so there will likely be a fix in short order.

Good to know.  Not in the habit of reading blog post comments for support.

I don't have any 'Fire TV', but i have tried two other Android set top boxes ('Pivos Xios' and OUYA), and with both of those I actually got better Plex client behaviour when using XBMC and the PlexBMC addon together with the Plex-adapted Amber skin, rather than using the official Plex client. I have no idea if such an XBMC setup could cope with the sound issues you guys are having (might be intrinsic to the hardware or OS), but it's something worth trying anyway. (This is assuming that the 'XBMC for Android' release can handle the 'Fire TV' hardware.)

Best regards: dlanor

I’ve PleXBMC on an Apple TV running Crystalbuntu. It’s good, but it doesn’t support the ‘Now Playing’ feature and there was also difficulty with DTS playback. The Amber UI is great though – better than the Android Plex app in my opinion.

We're working on an updated profile that should greatly improve things for folks. It seems there are differences between the dev units and the retail units. :(

In the meantime, we have a "work in progress" that you can use temporarily (subject to change, blah blah blah).

  1. In the Plex app on the Fire TV, go to 'Settings > Device media profile'. Make sure the 'Media profile' is set to "Android". Uncheck AC3, DD+, and DTS.

  2. Grab the new XML profile. Download and extract or otherwise put it in a text file named "Android-AFTB.xml"

  3. Place that new profile alongside your other profiles (location depends on OS):

    Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources\Profiles

    OS X: /Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/Resources/Profiles/

Linux: $PLEX_HOME/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Resources/Profiles/ (sorry, I don't have a Linux install to verify location, but you're all smart people!)

  4. Restart your Plex Media Server so it reads the new profile

Hopefully, that should at least improve things for now. As already mentioned, it's a work in progress.

Linux resource folder location (I think):

/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/System.bundle/Contents/Resources

Correct location (I think): /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Profiles

I named and placed the xml file there as you recommended Chris.  The end result is the same as what I had previously.  Playback is working with audio but it is transcode (aac) according to PMS.  I followed your guide on rebooting etc.

Thanks,

Jason

Alright scratch what I said before, it looks like the profiles go here:

/usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Profiles

I am still seeing the same results after creating the XML file in the folder above.  Still just transcode (aac) on audio according to PMS.

Thanks for chiming in, Chris. The inclusion of the xml has made no difference but I'm glad to know you're working on it.

That's too bad - it looks like it was designed to force transcode anything that wasn't AAC to multichannel AAC for playback as he said uncheck all of the "my receiver supports: a,b,c" type of options.

I'm not picking up my unit till next week so I can't help test! :(  But it looks like this is a faily small hiccup the devs should be able to overcome.

What I get a kick out of is everyone on the main forum bitching about this not working, but they're not Plex Pass members. Get on the donation train first then you can have a voice. :D

 - Are you folks saying that you still only get stereo audio with the new profile? If so, can you verify that the new profile is being used? You'd see a line in "Plex Media Server.log" along the lines of (with a different value, obviously):

Apr 02, 2014 21:39:00 [0x10f781000] DEBUG - Using profile Chromecast

 - Or are you now correctly getting multi-channel audio when you have multi-channel sources?

To be clear: transcoding AC3, DTS, etc. to AAC 5.1 is expected currently. There seem to be some discrepancies between what Amazon claims the box supports, what they list as supported in their dev/technical info, and then what actually seems to be accepted in practice. We're still working on it.

Mine is 'Using profile Android Fire TV'.  Should it be listing that or the XML file name?  I'm playing a movie with DTS 5.1 now, it is being trans-coded to AAC, but still 2 channel.  Here's a snipit of log if it helps any.  Have tested DD 5.1 & DTS MKV & Mp4 containers.

Media Profile is set to Android.  AC3, DD+, and DTS are unchecked.

I'll do some quick testing on mine and report back.

I just want to take a second to revel in the cohesiveness of this community.  I (and I'm sure others) don't take this for granted.  Other companies and their communities should follow this example (I'm looking at you, Ubiquiti!).

I look forward to receiving my FireTV today (if the UPS guy can get through the snow) because I know that the Plex guys are making sure it works and the community is making sure they're making sure it works :P

TGIF!

Ah, so here's where all the fun has been! Yesterday I was over in the general forums for hours trying (with a few others) to get the 5.1 issue resolved to no avail.

This morning I tried Chis C's method as outlined above, and got the same results as others... no 5.1.

Also, I noticed a line similar to for mkv is missing. Should that be added to the new xml?

Welcome to the party. =)

I saw and wondered the same, and to be sure tried some Mp4's to double check.  Same result.

After installing the new Android-AFTB profile and testing two source files, I'm still getting stereo PCM output to my receiver.  Logs are below.

Log File 1:  Archer S05E01 - 1080p h.264 .mkv, AC3 audio

Log File 2:  Lost S02E04 - 1080p h.264 .mkv, DTS audio

Android-AFTB.xml didn't work for me either. Tried it on a Synology box. Profiles were at /volume1/@appstore/Plex Media Server/Resources/Profiles/, changed the owner to plex user as well. Still only get stereo out.

Mines at home, not played yet I'm obviously going to do my part. But this is still making me wonder and I have to troll this thread and others to find about new new xml and other stuff.

David or someone..does PlexSync work w/ the usb port/SD storage? Not sure storage would be presented on this and thus PlexSync possible?

That's the correct profile. According to your log snippet, you're getting AAC 5.1, too. It's quite possible your receiver may see it as (L)PCM coming out of the Fire box, though.

As with David S, your logs also indicate the transcoder is outputting AAC 5.1. File 1:

I can see my Fire in Now Playing via 'My AFTB'....But i'm unable to cast to it, should this be possible?
